Winter's Bone 2010

completely overrated. Dull, drab and not this "gripping" movie that movie snobs want you to believe.

It's an interesting movie. The setting is not something we see often, I say that as I am from Missouri. Jennifer Lawrence is pretty good. The story is pretty straight forward. The cinematography is great, a lot of shaky cam shots to make you uneasy. Being mostly dialogue it can be a little boring.

Not much here. Definitely overrated and fairly dull.

I'd rather watch Justified.

Thriller about an unstructured family.

Realistic and absorbing. Jennifer Lawrence is amazing in it.

Raw. Gritty. Sobering. Realism at its highest form. A Southern Noir that includes very specific characters, motives, emotions, and consequence without crossing the line into broad generalizations and caricatures of a brutal environment the mainstream masses have rarely been exposed to.

Well this movie give new meaning to the term “Slow Burn”. This story just drags on and really has no build up at all. This was such a weak story, it actually amazes me that they actually decided to make a movie out of it.

The movie that introduced me to both Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes. In a movie filled with local extras and other non-actors, I had no idea either of these two were different. Stunning work by the both of them. The film oozes with atmosphere, and is one of my favorite examples of on-location filmmaking I’ve ever seen. Love the movie’s desaturated color palette and the way it evokes poverty, hopelessness, and a subliminal menace to the young woman trying to hold her family together.

"Never ask for what oughta be offered."

This was a surprise. I enjoyed it quite a bit and can say that I miss this Jennifer Lawrence. She is still good now, just does so well in movies like this. Also, Ozarks look brutal.

A young, willful teenage girl conducts a desperate hunt for her father, amidst the grey skies and brown, snow-kissed hills of an Ozark Mountain winter. It's a tough, winding trail that traverses thorny conversations with her cold, lip-zipped relatives as well as the bleak, desolate Missouri wilderness. The selfish restraint of nearly every face in this young girl's world is infuriating. By the closing chapters I wanted to see them all brained with a baseball bat, but it's not that kind of story. Instead, the film takes a note from its young, headstrong protagonist and simply endures, waiting for the storm to blow itself out before scoping what's left behind.

Jennifer Lawrence shines in the difficult leading role, balancing responsibility with determination, and enjoys plenty of help from a rich, convincing supporting cast. It's also quite appropriately shot, with a focus on rural poverty and a permeating lack of color. Bleak, dark and emotionally exhausting, it's a powerful bit of cinema, but not something I could bear to watch multiple times.
