i think it was 5 years ago when i finished reading this series. i was 12 and i think i was reading the books for quite a while and honestly, after all these years, i cant possibly be any happier with the outcome. this show has done the books justice so far. its like im reliving my childhood.
its funny, complicated, exciting and one of the best mysteries out there. if you havent read the books, i really suggest them. ive read a lot of famous mystery novels and nothing beats how connected and well built this series is.
the acting was amazing, the few musics of the show were great, there are some real stars here like neil patrick harris who forever owns my heart, and the mystery of lemony snicket and beatrice feels exactly as perfect as it felt in the books. what a solid show 10/10
Pretty boring. The Baudelaires actors are a bit two dimensional but maybe that's because of the script. Don't know why they didn't just get Carrey back to play Olaf.
The bringing of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events to Netflix has honestly been one of their best decisions they ever made. Every single thing about this series is amazing. This marvelous series has a great cinematography that just has to be seen. It is wonderful. And just few times have I seen a casting this good. You can never do wrong with Neil Patrick Harris, but this seems to be the role of his life. Count Olaf is Neil Patrick Harris and the fact that I honestly might believe that probably says enough, right? If you are a How I Met Your Mother fan, you will not be disappointed, because Barney, Count Olaf and Neil Patrick Harris are all the same. Or that's what they want you to believe. The children are exceptional and marvelous performers. The storytelling never gets in way, because even the writer gets a storyline. And the story itself? I would never doubt Lemony Snicket's writing skills, or his storytelling skills. Because those are breathtaking. From the very first second you will sit on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. I would recommend this show to every soul on this earth and I would want to make a living out of that. I mean it.
More like a series of repeated events
boring and obvious, sometimes funny, but not nearly enough to continue watching
Would work better if an Episode hast bout 20 min runtime.
So far it seems to be insanely similar to the Jim Carey movie. Similar tone, camera shots, set designs, costumes and all. Still good though.
More like a series of repeated events
If you loved the books, you needn't fear disappointment! The tone stays very true to irreverent comedic melancholy of the books, and is supported technically by the sets and lighting (like a city immediately after a rainstorm, generally damp and gloomy but especially vivid at the same time).
Note that all characters are closer to two-dimensional caricatures than actual people. This is, however, in line with the book series, where the 'writer' reports facts and events with emotional distance. I believe this was designed to allows readers the room to marvel at the utter ridiculousness of all the adults, and at the inventive perseverance of the Baudelaire children, while still preserving the central overarching mystery. This strategy works great in print, but doesn't translate quite as well to the screen.
For myself, the dark humour and Neil Patrick Harris's portrayal of the frankly outrageous Count Olaf more than made up for flat characters, but if neither the author's dark humour nor NPH is your thing, then ymmv.
A fantastic adaptation of the books, so the only real flaws I have to point out are the ones that the books also share. The pacing is shockingly good, considering each book gets an hour and a half to play out.
I remember being so excited about this show before the first season came out and when it did I hated it. Didn't even finish the whole thing.
So good! It captures the essence of the books perfectly. And Sunny is amazing, couldn't get enough of her!
Looks very interesting and promising based on the trailer.
The similarities between Count Olaf and How I Met Your Mother's Barney are delicious, making the choice of Neil Patrick Harries obvious!
This show is excellent adaptation of the books. Extraordinary acting, superb cinematography, costumes, the whole production screams of AAA standard. Only problem with the show is that I still don't understand what is their target audience.
It is based on children's books for ages 9-12, so if you are a child between ages 9-12, you should very much love this show, but then again what are you doing on this site.
If you have few cough more years perhaps you can reminiscence reading this as a child and feel nostalgic, but as an adult watching you realize why it was written for child audience, and suddenly all that you loved when you read the books is beginning to annoy you. You realize that the story is extremely slow, plot lines are drawn heavily and repeated, oh, so many times. Character actions are mostly idiotic and non-coherent, not to mention stereotypical.
Sadly I think this show will go out like "Cat in the Hat" or any other similar adaptation of books for young children. To serious for children, and to childish for adults.
this was just addictive from beginning to end , loved it
Succeeded with what the movie did not
I dont understand how this is classified as a 'comedy'. It's boring, stupid and most of all I would use the description 'depressing'. Yes, that is the definition of a black comedy... but this is just.... appalling. That means terrible.
The amount of (semi-)famous actors in the series is amazing though.
A very fun show that is split into three very different seasons. The style of this show fits perfectly with the kind of story they were trying to tell, not to mention the characters in this show are so interesting and fun to watch on-screen.
This is melodrama, farce or hyperbole, which means… Yes, we know what those mean! This series excels in building a child’s vocabulary but I’d advise against watching it with children under 12. It’s scary! I had to warm up to it, giving the first two seasons of episodes 7s (okay but not my jam), all the while, wondering if it was worth watching further. By the third season, I had finally entered into the farce and was giving the episodes 8s (clever). I’ve never been a great fan of Neil Patrick Harris but his work on this is amazing. He was a total chameleon. Once you get in the groove, I think you’ll find it entertaining. I give this series a 7 (imaginative) out of 10. [Adventure Comedy Melodrama Farce]
A really disappointing series and frankly destroys my interest in this universe once and for all. I read the books when I was younger and already found it pretty repetitive, dry, and overly verbose at times, but the show didn't need to carry those characteristics alongside poor CGI, dated fourth-wall breaks, and simple characterizations of all cast members. The show does go through all of the books and is fully finished, but it just feels like it has bad design quality, lots of slow and repetitive gags and sequences, and a main cast of characters that lacks the charm, intrigue, and relatability that would have somewhat gotten me hooked. I would say just avoid this one unless you're a mega fan of the "A Series of Unfortunate Events" books, as it somehow manages to be less interesting that the movie version despite that one's inherent lack of connection to the books.
(+) Some funny moments with Neil Patrick Harris' "Count Olaf"
(=) Competent story structure, but extremely repetitive
(-) Poor production quality
(-) Characters lack depth and relatability
(-) Unfunny, yet lacks a serious tone and instead goes for something "whimsical"
Final Verdict: 3.33/10 (Poor)
One of the worst tv show i ever see
As someone who had problems picking it up the first time, "forgot about it", then picked it up again now that it's finished, I can't recommend it enough. Maybe watching it in 2020 adds some immersion to it, I dunno...
Could barely make it through the first episode. Hard pass.
season 3 is only 7 episodes according to netflix
Probably one of the best shows on TV right now. The Baudelaire's are adorable and Count Olaf is really "horrible". I've not read the books but I intend to now! Starring the "Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender" but for real someone tell me is it a boy or a girl?!
Season 2 is very annoying compared to the first one, and the fact that there's going to be a third season makes it even more annoying.
This show is simply amazing❣️
Overall, it's entertaining and worth watching, but certainly not without some flaws. By design, there's not much of a middle ground in the characters - they're either very flat or over the top - but the problem is, some of the actors are more successful working in those extremes than others For instance, Warburton's casting was genius and his low key, yet concerned, delivery is perfect. Neil Patrick Harris, on the other end of the spectrum, is equally effective in delivering his performance of a character which is by nature over the top, but it doesn't come across as too campy. That being said, I think a lot of the blame for some of the less than desireable performances can be laid at the feet of a largely lackluster script. Technically, it's a treat; the sets and costumes are wonderful and there's some nice direction and camera choices throughout. Oh, one other thing, though - are these damned kids really worth the trail of bodies they're leaving in their wake? Just saying...
i love netflix for so many reasons, and this is one of them. there are a ton of screen adaptations out that have failed to do their original book justice, but it especially bums me out when an author is unable to write the screenplay for an adaptation of their book or unable to have enough of a say in how their story plays out on screen. this series, unlike the movie adaptation, has lemony snicket written all over it, and watching it has been so much fun.
Brilliant acting, beautiful sets beautifully shot. I wasn't hugely familiar with the books, bit after my time :) ,but I will have to give them a read. Looking forward to the next season. All the cast are super with special mention to Neil Patrick Harris, superb as Count Olaf.
I just have finished it and I liked it! and it was good to see NPH playing again the most charismatic fellow on the show, but the stupidity of some characters (the banker in particular) infuriates me exceedingly.
Also, the CGI baby's face is pretty creepy.
This show has been such a welcome breath of fresh air to me. I have not (yet) read the books but have seen the movie so much I knew some of the story but merely the surface of it as turned out quickly.
It's always tricky when you already know characters that are now being portrayed by a different cast but O my, what a brilliant cast! The children, Count Olaf, Lemony Snicket, Josephine, Monty, all were amazing! The henchpeople of Olaf are hilarious. All the characters and actors fit perfectly together and with the story and it is so beautifully done, music, filming, editing.
I am hooked and can only advise people to watch this. I'm also going to start reading those books now. I'm not ready to say goodbye to the story yet and wait a year for the next season. Hooked, completely hooked.
It’s much better than the movie but I feel like it has a fundamental misunderstanding of the theme of the books. The primary theme of the series is that kids can understand and deal with a whole lot more than adults give them credit for, and yet this series is trying to make it light and silly, which just doesn’t work. The narrator explaining what everything “means” was getting on my fuckin' nerves. The ending is cute, tho.
After leaving Shameless, Sheila became a Judge. Seriously some things she does, like falling for Count Olafs lies feel so much like a thing Sheila would do, there is no difference at all. This ladies and gentleman is not a critic, it is in fact an applause!

It's a bit creepy that Violet looks so similat to Emily Browning from the movie with Jim Carrey.
