All these Marceline's and Simon's stories from times before Ice King are so heavy. Especially as when you know how Ice King is.

i believe that one of the main pieces that makes this cartoon unique is the relationship between Marceline and Ice King through the post-apocalyptic situation of Earth before it actually became the land of Ooo, and then both of them being alone for so many, many years as father and daughter, although the character of the Ice King proves to be increasingly intricate. The whole narrative around these two characters is mysterious, but it's told in the most warm and intimate way possible, while distancing the general cartoon outcome from a more humorous or eerier side. And always there's a surprise on both sides when the story focuses on these two, the surprise from what they went through and how one tried their best to help the other, and the surprise of how some of the narrative central characters (for example in this episode, we saw remnants of bubblegum around the city) gradually arrived in these scenarios, thus increasing even more the mystery around how Ooo was created and a possible consequent cause with our contemporary world.
