It was last season i truly realized how horrible all these characters are. Not as characters, but as people. None of them are really likeable or good, especially in recent seasons. And it's starting to grate on me now, as it did in the earliest seasons. Family Guy gets away with it because of it's random absurdity, cutaways, and some good characters. American Dad tries to be a bit more ambitious, but it still isn't that good.
The show has so much potential, if the characters actually changed and developed. But over all these seasons and forever seasons more, it probably won't, and that's why it'll never be a truly good show. It's such a huge shame, because it just under-utilizes all that animation time and potential. They won't even try short-term changes, except for the notable examples of Jeff staying with them, which was kinda nice as a change, but had mixed results in execution.
It's a kids show for adults, most of the time.
But in the times it does deviate from the usual formula, it often works, sometimes to really good effect. But those episodes are very few each season.
