Season 5's Destiny will give a more well-rounded exploration of what is done here but that isn't to say that this doesn't work. With Wesley's introduction, the chemistry between the core feels immediately more convincing than with Doyle and as such, Somnambulist works very well. When Renner's Penn basically states that Angelus turned him into monster and is responsible for his destruction it simply doesn't yield the same impact as Spike's words in Destiny. That said, this is a fine episode and the first of ANGEL to comment on Angel's past haunting his present.
