[8.0/10] This is the season that just keeps on giving. Lots to like in this one.
The main story, about father/son approval with George Michael, GOB, George Sr., and Stan Sitwell, is superb. There’s a lot of great humor that comes from the two eldest Bluth boys trying to get their dad’s approval. George Sr. intentionally putting down Michael’s ideas to motivate him, and it leading Michael to feed his ideas to GOB at Sitwell’s company and cheat to win the inter-company softball game leads to a number of great gags where Michael tries to justify himself or pretend he’s doing it for GOB. And the irony of him standing up to George Sr. being the only thing that earns his approval is great.
Plus GOB and Stan Sitwell are great here too. The hairless jokes with Stan are ridiculous but amusing. And GOB’s overwhelmed reaction to actually getting the slightest bit of approval and support is outstanding (especially when he’s getting credit for Michael’s ideas.)
Tobias and Maeby at the film studio is just gold. Tobias’s awkward schtick of trying to talk himself up and then forgetting to use his last name is great. And Maeby conning her way into a studio exec job while just trying to get someone else to do her homework (and, in a way, teach her dad about his upcoming role as con man #2) is hilarious.
The continued Michael-George Michael-Ann saga is also very funny. Michael telling his son to “play the field” and the confusion about “get a kiss” cracked me up. I was less on board, as usual, with Lindsay’s storyline where she’s hooked on teamocil and out of it, but it had a few good laughs, like her brushing her hair with the telephone.
Last but not least, I got a huge kicked out of Lucille trying to get Buster out of the army using her old USO connections. You get a great cameo from J.K. Simmons, and the scene where Buster is in basic training and has his army cap exchanged for a tophat and cane just had me in stitches.
Overall, this is definitely the show pitching its fastball and getting great laughs throughout.
