[7.3/10] Another solid outing. My favorite part was Buster and Oscar, who make for a great pair of dunces. The two of them riding a tandem bike backwards, or not realizing that since their shackles were for the stage, they can just unclasp them is great dope humor. At the same time I got a kick out of Oscar lying to Buster about Buster’s freedom so the two can spend more time together after learning about the situation from his brother, only for Buster to lie to Oscar about the same thing for the same reason after learning about the situation from his brother. (And that’s before Tony Hale’s incredible mannequin act.)
Speaking of which, it feels like the show’s done a better job at doing the clockwork stories it used to. It’s not much, but Oscar & Buster, Lucille & George Sr., and Tobias’s new family all ending up in and around the Tent City at the mall led to some nice farce. I especially enjoyed the gags where Buster smelled Lucille’s perfume mixed with the scent of popcorn, and Tobias getting into the wrong tent and seeing Buster’ mannequin routine.
Tobias’s bit with his new family was hit or miss, but I do appreciate the return of Mrs. Featherbottom. Them intruding on Maeby’s new life (and her attempts to get Stan out of it by pretending he has retrograde amnesia) is a good setup. I just hope the show knows what to do with Tobias and company, since they’ve been hit or miss so far.
I also didn’t love the routine with George Sr. trying to win back Lucille. There’s some good laughs when the two are trying to play dumb and literally not understanding the concept of telling the truth to Michael. But the failed attempts to woo Lucille and the underwhelming dust-ups with Dusty didn’t do much for me.
I did, however, get a kick out of GOB’s antics here. His attempts to hide a dead body at the model home and foist it onto his youngest brother under the guise of the “magician’s assistant oath” is a dark laugh. Likewise, GOB realizing he’s bi when going to conversion therapy, when doing so will mess up his standing with the gay mafia is an amusing turn in the narrative. Plus, we’re moving things along with the “Where’s Lucille 2” storyline, to where my bet is that she’s the one in the body bag, not Tony Wonder.
Overall, my only real belly laughs here were from Buster’s comical posing, but still, there were enough chuckles to make weight in this one.
