This episode is a breaking point for Aang. Yes, he’s already seen and grieved over the loss of his people and culture back in season one, but he never really lost hope or a connection to that past — his childhood — until he loses Appa: the final remaining link. When he does, it marks a turning point in Aang’s story, maturity, and naivety. He will always retain some of that childlike optimism, but after this moment, Aang truly grows up.

Aang's rage and irritability in this episode used to make me feel uncomfortable as a child, but now, it's what really makes it and sets its apart from the rest for me.

It's so heartbreaking to see Aang like this. You truly feel the impact of Appa's loss. This episode is also a really good showing for Katara, she really holds herself together in a crisis.
