1st time hearing of Baki..what a fun watch
MY THOUGHTS ON BAKI:
-WARNING: Spoilers Below-
First things first I do NOT dislike this show, I just really don't like it. It's so weird and ugly looking and plot is a complete mess. I couldn't finish the first season simply because of how it was animated. I'm usually okay with trying different types of animations so when I went into this I never thought the design would bug me but I have never seen something so ugly.
It's a big shame to be honest, I wasn't sure whether to continue watching this or not because there was something about the show that kept bringing me back and kept my focus there but the ugliness of it just put me away. I found the plot too messy as well and had no idea what was going on at times.
A friend told me to continue watching this and not give up on it so I returned to it and literally couldn't finish up where I left off, straight away the animation put me off again so it seems I'll forever be stuck on Season 1 Episode 5. I can't mention the plot too much because I didn't get that far in it but from what I watched it was too messy and from what I knew of Baki is he was so, so irritating.
Overall I feel like if you're a fan of martial arts anime you may like this a lot more than me. If you can also look past the dreadful animation then maybe you'll find something better about this, who knows? It's up to you to decide but for me I'll never return to this.
Overall rating: 4/10
Been a while since i have seen something that was was so unbelievable boring.
This show was really disappointing, just barely made it through the 13 episodes that were available on Netflix because I was hoping it would get better at some point, but it never did.
The voice acting (at least in the english dub) makes it difficult to tell the difference between the expositional storyteller, the thoughts of the characters, and the actual spoken lines. Especially noticable when one character says something off-screen, followed by another off-screen characters thoughts.
The story is all over the place, jumping from following the main character to following some random character we're seeing for the first time with no obvious connection to the main character, from brutal fight scenes, to the main character not knowing how to talk, to board meetings.
The characters are weird, the main character apparently doesn't know how to run or jump, even if he supposedly is 17 and is an experienced martial artist, the police chief thinks a board meeting is best held by shouting at everyone he disagrees with, repeatedly, and everyone is apparently immortal and will magically heal from any injury.
On top of it all the animation and fight coreography is bad, we never see the actual moves, and it is never clear when any character actually lands a blow of significance.
Baki is more about unnecessarily extended fights and crappy animation than it is about baki himself...:joy::joy::joy:
Let me preface this with the fact, that I did enjoy watching it so far, so I'll give 6/10. But....
I can only agree with the other comments, the plot doesn't really follow a clear line and the characters behave very weirdly. There is also no sense of power scaling, because sometimes a characters is absolutely dominating, and then an episode later they get absolutely dominated. The animation is good though, except for the terrible 3D animations they rarely used.
And for the German dub, the pronunciation of Japanese words is horrible. In Baki The Grappler it was perfect, but here it's anything between wrong emphasis and straight up mispronunciation. A Netflix show should have better QA.
I ended up enjoying my time watching this show, I mean I liked the fights and the overall animation (when they tried to use 3d models...horrendous. please never again) but overall...it feels like such a mess.
Most of the time the dialogues or the characters developments/actions felt completely nonsensical, and left me questioning wtf was happening.
Sometimes a character gets pumped up like unbeatable, perfect, unmatched, then he gets his ass cheeks clapped by an absolute random character (that you actually never seen sometimes), then they fight someone else and they are once again deities of fighting. Like, you either are the most powerful being on earth in this series or you are fighting against the most powerful being on earth.
But this isn't really that much of a problem cause it's something that you see often in anime, the thing I really disliked the most is that
The series is called "Baki", there is a character called "Baki", everybody pumps him up like he is the most absurd human being to ever grace this world, he is the son of "the strongest being in the world" (which makes it weird because he is often called "the strongest human in the world" and it feels like a contradiction) BUT.....you barely see him, when he is actually shown he either does nothing, says something that most of the time is nonsensical, or loses in some way. I swear I have seen the whole series and I think if I had to count all the times Baki fought two hands would be more than enough to keep count. This dude's does NOTHING and gets literally ALL the praise. And finally when he actually DOES fight and he DOES win...it's always in like...2 punches? I get it "ohhh 2 punches and he already won he is so strong", dude just develop this goddam character!!! At some point this other dude, mohammad ali Jr. comes in and he gets MULTIPLE episodes of him fighting, developing his character, his story, EVERYTHING. And you don't see Baki ONCE. Like seriously, who is the main character anymore ???? Mohammad Ali Jr. seriously got more characterization in like 3 episodes than Baki got in the WHOLE series.
All in all, as I said, i liked the series, but for the fights and animation... certainly not for the plot that feels really clunky, messy and disconnected
cgi suckssss ewwww not good!?!??!?!?!!
