Bancroft 2017

Two cases - one ongoing and one in the past - may or may not interlink. 27 years ago, a young woman was brutally murdered. 17 stab wounds and a bite. An inexperienced detectiive is assigned to cold case work, and she fastens on that murder, Her current guv'nor - Bancroft - as a young policewoman, discovered the body. There are hints that the woman may not have been dead, The case was closed as a burglary gone wrong, but there is clearly something more to it. Bancroft visits her superior officer at the time - soon after she leaves, we see that he's been killed. Did Bancroft do it? With all this in the background, Bancroft is trying to break up an Asian gang. She has the brother of the ringleader in custody, but she's after the man himself. The police chief, about to retire, refuses to release the young officer from the cold case work.

Although some of story line seems a little far-fetched, and Bancroft's behaviour somewhat one-dimensional, I enjoyed the series - another good British crime drama, as only they know how to produce.

According to ITV, IMDb etc. there is no episode 4 in the second (last) season.

I wanted this series to be so much better than it was but it ended up being just OK for me. First the good: The acting was solid. Sarah Parish, Faye Marsay and Amara Karan gave good performances. The casting was good. For me the shortcomings were all about the writing: Bancroft character was drawn with limited moral range and ends up being unlikeable because there is no room for internal conflict. Is she just a psychopath or is there some personal remorse that transcends getting caught? The writer also chose to have no seasonal plot arch - there are no small resolves which diminishes the tension between Bancroft and Stevens (self serving license versus justice). As it lies, if they renew the series, it will still be working out an unresolved season one. I rate this series a 6 (fair) out of 10 and hope for a better written season two which I will watch because of the potential of the cast. [Crime Drama]
