So I was a little hesitant to watch this series. I was a big fan of the original series and love comedy and the old laugh tracks. This series is a real drama series and Is much better than I expected. I would say it’s definitely worth a watch.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to all involved - the depictions of the characters, the themes touched on, the Kobe and Chadwick tributes, the tunes...This was a slap - I'm all in! :black_heart::fist_tone5:
Damn, this Carlton is about to piss me off too
I tried to hate this. But it was a great throwback to the old show with a change in theme. I liked it!
Shout out Eazy The Block Captain!
It was cool to see Freeway as the coach.
That was.... a lot. Honestly it was too much. WAY too much and THEN they went to LA and doubled down. Still there's a lot to like about the show so far. Not a lot of it is Will but Carlton is performed well (if written terribly), Phillip and Geoffery are excellent and Jazz somehow steals the show.
Carlton.... I don't understand how they can remake the show while completely missing the character of Carlton. It's almost like it was written by someone who has heard of the show and gotten a contact context to who Carlton is but never actually bothered to watch episodes. Carlton's whole purpose is to expand the understanding of what it means to be black but here we have instead the opposite. The inferance of who Carlton was from the outside. People who saw Carlton and just saw him as a black Alex P Keaton. A young republican because he's rich and doesn't know better. It's weird.
Will is exaggerated to the point of buffonery. Which is one thing in a comedy but utterly ridiculous and tone-deaf in a drama. It was bad enough in philly when he presented as the sort of little fish who refuses to leave the hood like Young Buck's mother in Footprints but to see him do that was beyond comprehension. Then to see him completely unable to comprehend social cue utterly belys the street smarts which made Will, and any gangster lovable. He's like a 10 year old in a high schooler's body. Just all id barely any object permanence. This episode's Will is doing to philly dudes what The Big Bang Theory did to scientists.
I'll watch more hopefully it picks up better than that as we progress.
first episode in, already hooked.. Fresh Prince for realz.

An incredibly strong start to a series I was convinced would be a sitcom remake. It’s dark and gritty and it was something I didn’t know I needed until now. Can’t wait to see what the rest of the season brings!
