This season was kinda bad (by Black Mirror standards), The Twilight Zone was better.
The best episode was the Miley Cyrus one.
I think this show hasn't had a more "meh" season than this one, literally nothing really dystopic, nothing scary, nothing noteworthy.
I thought season 4 was hardly worth mentioning, but season 5 just takes that and runs with it waaaaay further. Let's just make believe season 5 doesn't exist, shall we?
"Smithereens" dragged a bit too long for its content but was the only decent episode of this season. Then we have a VR yaoi fuckbuddy story and a mediocre teen adventure short movie. They introduce themes that could have been developed into something darker and deeper, but despite all episodes being longer than 60 minutes each, they end up just scratching the surface. It's still admirable how they manage to make new stories every time after so many episodes though.
Ever since Netflix aqquired BM it's slowly losing what made it so great in the first place. It still has good episodes that I personally enjoy but its been missing those dark, scary, dreadful 'holy fuck'-moments of the first seasons.
I guess I should say congrats netflix, after lowering the quality more and more with every season they finally fucked it up properly, did D&D by any chance cameo in the writing room
Very bad season. Plots are pretty weak. The darkness, the dystopia, the incisiveness on new technologies misuses, everything that made Black Mirror what it was is 100% gone. It's barely futuristic,and the issues are the wrong ones, like they lost what they were trying to say in the middle or just didn't think it through.
They were some very BM subjects that could have been talked about in these episodes : They could have lost their identity in the virtual space in the first one. The ever spying and omnipotence on your life from data collected by social networks in the second. The constant spying of in-home assistant, or the impact of these techs on young minds in the third. But they were totally ignored.
Kinda like if somebody was given a starting idea for a BM episode without knowing what the show is (or used to be) about and then did it in a totally different style.
Acting is actually very good in general, so it's not a pain to watch it, just a bore, but still.

It's not bad. Still solid TV. But Smithereens is the standout of a 3-episode season. Striking Vipers is interesting. Rachel, Jack, And Ashley Too was meh. It's not a bad season, but easily the worst of the bunch.
Good season but not the best. Andrew Scott was brilliant.
All episodes lacked depth in my opinion.
Seasons 3 and 4 had already been somewhat disappointing, this one is in the same vein but kinda worse. It would seem Nosedive (S03E01) was (inadvertently) right on the money...
It's not bad enough that you should skip it entirely but... Well, don't expect to be challenged, to have to re-think anything you've ever done or thought about doing it. The latest seasons of The X-Files comes to mind...
The last episode made this season good. The first two did make me yawn. So boring and stupid stories. The second story was not even a thing in the Future. I hope if there Will be a next season, they give us some better stuff like the episodes : metalhead. I really loved that one.

This show has become so frustrating to watch, not just because it's a shadow of the excellent show that it was, but because the show still gets so much right. Charlie Booker's grasp of technology is really unparalleled and he can show the future so much better than anyone else. When they do make a VR version of Street Fighter (aka Striking Vipers), it's tough not to imagine the few minutes of in show footage with the two fighters hitting one another in the beautiful vistas of the computer generated backgrounds. Or, when Ashley Too shows it processing her response by spinning colors in it's eyes, it's not hard to see that in a real life toy.
Everyone else can show their poor grades for the show, and there's no doubt it's warranted.And, I'll still watch this show over the new Twilight Zone. Hopefully they can get the easy stuff done with the same skill that they get the tough stuff.

I feel like the focus was on the wrong thing & the end was a horrible solution to a problem that's easy to fix.
2nd wasn't "techie" enough to be a Black Mirror episode and it would have been far more interesting if the focus was shifted to the social media spying that went on during the hostage situation.
3rd was the best IMHO... NOT saying it was a great Black Mirror episode, it was mediocre on the Black Mirror standard but the robot was adorable and how they gave the robot Ashley's personality is in line with what I would expect from a Black Mirror episode. As a bonus the Jack actress looked so much like a young Lindsay Lohan it freaked me out. The whole episode I was thinking is that Hannah Montana? Is that the chick from Mean Girls? How does Hannah Montana look so old while Mean Girls looks so young?!?
The 5th season is a huge disappointment. Weak plots, boring episodes.

Black Mirror went from sick, dystopian futures to... VR romance, social media and a kid's comedy with Miley Cyrus.
I see why shows get worse over time, but I can't wrap my head around the fact that Charlie Brooker is responsible for both the masterpieces that this show has produced and the big question mark that is this fifth season.
