[5.8/10] What the hell was this? I’ll cop to some cleverness in combining Home Alone with a horror movie, but the execution of the idea was downright asinine. The group panicking over the killer wasn’t as funny as it needed to be, and the emotional beats didn’t land any more effectively.
Plus good lord what was the revival of Lenny Leighman? Fine, you want to bring the guy back from the dead for plot purposes? Sure. Why do we have to do a first person Nightingale effect story with it? And god help me on the “doctor goes down on Lenny’s ken doll crotch” scene. A lot of this season feels like it was written by twelve-year-olds, and this may be the peak.
If that weren’t enough, I cannot be bothered to care about Nomi de facto leaving both Mo and Dawn. She’s barely been a character outside of one episode where she got to have real feelings and motivations. We never really saw why she and Mo worked and what about them connected. She was obviously just a living obstacle between Mo and Dawn, so her bailing has zero emotional impact. What a big waste of a story her crap this year was.
It’s also not at all clear to me why the RNC is done with Blair. He was too much of a follower? Or his killer is a liability? It seems like a really strange left turn out of nowhere that’s not at all accounted for by prior events.
There’s still some laughs here when you get the whole gang together and let them bounce off of one another. But those laughs are few and far between, especially when the episode tries to do dumb romcom shit with Mo and Dawn.
Overall, I’ve really enjoyed Black Monday, but crud like this has left me hoping that the next episode will be the series finale. I know that’s a naive hope with Showtime, but it’s where I am.
