This season starts out pretty strong, but then gets weaker going into the second arc. The strongest part of the show is its dynamic between Rin (the main protagonist) and the main cast. Rin is very likeable and is a joy to have on screen. The remaining cast is a mixture of shonen staples and unique takes on certain archetypes. One that particularly surprised me was Ryuji, who initially comes off as a punk bully-type character but actually is extremely studious and a wise leader. The best moments were the slice of life moments that just had Rin living as a high school student and dealing with his special powers.
Where the season falters, I think, is the overarching plot. It starts out very "Monster of the Day"-ish, which is fine given the slice of life style. But once the show zeroes in on its main plot, things get very convoluted very quickly. Characters are bouncing between "good" and "evil" constantly and the show throws a lot of plot twists at you that don't feel like natural developments in the story. Overall, I thought the season ended "just good," whereas it started as a rather compelling shonen. Looking forward to season 2, which was released six years after season 1.
