[7.3/10] Fun, if not overwhelming episode. I like the idea that Lousie isn’t a joiner, and so sloughs off the communal cheer of Spirit Week at school, only to find and reluctantly (but excitedly) form a group of her own. The quest to find a Loch Ness monster-esque creature near Wonder Wharf works well as a plot engine, and the dynamic between Louise and the other members of her makeshift crew is very funny. The gags are good (I got a particularly kick out of the diarrhea face joke -- sue me), and the theme of Louise finding her tribe despite herself is a good one.
I was less enamored with Bob’s B-plot. He takes a Master Class-esque web course from a famous chef he admires, only to have trouble “getting it.” The montage when he finally does learn to appreciate “the everythingness of food”, and the ensuing bits of him crying over it are pretty great. But up to that point, the show can’t wring much comedy from it.
The rest of the family makes for a funny Greek chorus. Gene trying to go to school in his birthday suit and dressing up as a character from Steel Magnolias is a laugh. Tina going “nuts” for crazy hair day with two berets is funny and her checking in on Louise is sweet. And Linda is hilariously weird in small bits as usual, from her Wharfy voice to her slapping lotion into her feet.
Overall, this is a solid episode with a good story for Louise, and a mixed bag B-plot for Bob.
