[6.7/10] This episode is a little too convoluted in its premise without enough laughs to balance it out. Bob gets in a fender bender with three other people, and has to get his story straight, with or without the help of the others involved, before a police officer shows up to write the official report. It leads to some frantic advice from Teddy, a flummoxed Bob not knowing whether or how to form an “alliance” with one of the other drivers, and a moral choice.
That’s not the worst setup, but in action, it leaves the episode without much of a spine. Instead, there’s just a series of aimless conversations with the other drivers (who outside of the party clown, don’t have much in the way of laughs) and elaborate attempts to construct what really happened during the pile-up, like a mystery novel. These bits don’t really work, and there’s not much in the way of chuckles to be had from them.
Still, it requires some integrity from Bob, who realizes thanks to Gene’s songs that he didn’t signal before pulling into the intersection and so takes the blame to spare the kind party clown from having to shoulder it. His upstanding approach inspires his kids to be kinder to one another when divvying up a big bag of candy. It’s a decent realization of the “be honest and own up to your mistakes” message, but gets lost in the convolutedness of the setup and the sense of injustice at no one else owning up to their mistakes here.
Overall, this is one of the lesser lights of season 11, with a “Bob as a good guy” story that still leaves a sour taste in your mouth.
