[7.7/10] A nice episode. The team of Louise, Regular Size Rudy, and Millie isn’t a combo we get very often, and the show found some good laughs there. Their scheme to counterfeit fake ancient greek coins to have “money” to spend at their teacher’s little school market is an amusingly low-stakes scheme that’s nevertheless pretty darn clever! The trio of RSR feeling guilty and ready to crack, Millie being way too into the crime, and Louise being somewhere in the middle makes for a fun dynamic, especially when Louise can barely hold her compatriots bags from bigger purchases.
My favorite part, though, is the larger dynamic of the whole thing. We’ve all had that one really cool school unit or event that everyone looks forward to. By sitting in teh wrong spot that prevents her teacher from calling on her a lot, Loiise feels cheated of something she’s been looking forward to. This obviously isn’t the right approach, but you sympathize with Louise on that front, which makes it comprehensible as a childhood misstep. There’s a sweetness, an essential relatable kindness to the whole thing, that makes it work. The resolution, where the teacher forgives them, but makes them work the end-of-unit party, is a nice compromise.
The B-story is a lot of low-stakes fun too. Bob briefly sleeping in the basement because Linda’s been kicking in her sleep is a characteristically odd premise for a B-story. It’s fun when Bob turns that quirk of needing a good night's sleep into the revelatory realization that this is the first time he’s had his own space since he was a kid. His little treats to himself are really cute, as is the idea that “mom sleepover” is fun at first for Gene and Tina, but eventually becomes literally and figuratively exhausting.
The resolution is also incredibly sweet. Bob texting Linda about his pepper book, the two curling up together when she brings down his toothbrush, and the pair realizing that despite the temporary fun they had apart, they miss each other too much to keep it up is almost unbearably wholesome. Another classic Bob’s Burgers b-plot.
On the whole, both halves of this one are quite good, and feel unique in terms of the stories and characters, with that trademark oddball energy mixed with sweetness that this show does so well.
