9.1/10. Well, this episode just proves that Teddy is the spiritual successor to Bill Dauterive from King of the Hill (a show on which Bob's Burgers co-developer Jim Dauterive wrote and executive produced.) Teddy is one of my favorite character, and him roping the Belchers into trying to impress his ex-wife was hilarious, in a very Bill sort of way. In particular, the sequence where Teddy kept trying to get Denise's attention and u-turning the boat when it didn't work out, leading to a serious of mishaps in the effort, was the kind of hilarious cringe-y humor that works so well with the character.
The emotional arc, of Teddy learning to let go through the example of the man who bought an island and built a home for a woman who didn't want him, is a little too tidy and convenient, much like in last week's episode, but it's still sweet and affecting when Teddy chooses to blow up his own boat as a way to make his peace with the past. But more than the emotional stuff, this was just a damn funny episode. Bob's usual tolerant but annoyed demeanor through all of this was classic, as he and Teddy are a consistently great pairing, and Linda and Tina roleplaying with Teddy was comic gold. Plus, Gene and Louise had all sorts of great comic one-liners to throw in to sweeten the pot.
And the B-story about Tina wanting a cell phone and hanging onto a chalkboard eraser to prove she won't lose it was the kind of low-stakes but amusingly awkward goal for the eldest Belcher child that's almost always a good source of humor. Tina's such a great character, that she works when getting her own big stories, but also works in more of a comic relief supporting plot like this too.
Overall, it's a nice boost from a more lackluster season premiere, giving the spotlight to one of my favorite characters on the show, and diving into that combination of sweetness, patheticness, and suggestability that made Bill Dauterive such an endearing character on Bob's Burgers's forebear series.
