It's 2010 - four years to go to the Commonwealth Games, much of which will take place in Dalmarnock in the East End of Glasgow. Once thriving, Dalmarnock is now one the UK's most deprived areas - but with the games, all this might change.

Thirty-year-old local entrepreneur Darren has five kids and another on the way. Forced to close his businesses to make way for the Athletes' Village, he's hoping the compensation will help pay for his children to get private education. Across the street Margaret and her family are the last residents in a derelict row of tenements which the City Council need. Margaret and husband Jack refuse the initial compulsory purchase order of £30,000 - and end up barricading themselves in.

Meanwhile 18-year-old Steven is grabbing an opportunity brought about by the Games. Having left school with no qualifications he gets a job with the construction company building the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

Much of the 2014 Commonwealth Games will take place in Dalmarnock in Glasgow's East End. Dalmarnock's beating heart is its community centre. But the council's plans reveal there's no planned replacement for it once it's knocked down to make way for a temporary bus terminal. The centre's manager Yvonne is not about to take this lying down. Soon she scales up her ambitions, determined to secure a stake of games legacy for her local community.

In the meantime Steven's work comes to an end on the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and he faces an uncertain future, while Margaret's tenement block is demolished, with no compensation in sight. And local entrepreneur Darren faces a devastating blow when his brother, Brian, who's spent a most of his adulthood behind bars, is brutally murdered.

It's 2013. Just twenty months to go till the Games. Now a local councillor, Yvonne's dreams are close to being realised. She's secured £5m funding for a new community centre with a doctor's surgery and crèche, but needs to find available land quickly.

Meanwhile Darren bounces back. With the aid of the compensation money, his eldest daughter Cameron is in her second year at one of Glasgow's top private schools, while he takes over the local pub and opens a new shop.
