Set in Paris, Gareth Davies's film of tragic jealousy and vengeance follows aging spinster Bette (Margaret Tyzack), whose less-than-exciting life causes her such bitterness toward her prosperous relatives that she eventually vows to destroy them. The crowning blow comes when she suffers unbearable humiliation at the hands of her cousin. Colin Baker, Margaret Boyd and Helen Mirren round out the cast of this 1971 adaptation of a Balzac novel.
