Black police constable Nigel Spenser arrests suspect Makin in the early hours of the morning and then finds himself faced with a brutality charge. Paul Dangerfield is faced with an ethical dilemma when Spenser's superior, DI Ken Jackson, puts pressure on him to help get Nigel off. Matters are made more irritating for the police surgeon when Ken contacts him in the middle of his first date with sultry barrister Kate Durrani. Things look bad for Nigel until Matthew Evans' body is found in his garden and the property in the Makin's car is proved to have been stolen from Evans' house. Elsewhere, the case of a suspicious death involving elderly Sarah Harris, one of Joanna's patients, is solved when her husband Brigadier Harris admits to a mercy killing.
Paul's son Marty gets caught up in an accidental shooting which results in the death of local farmer Hilton. Matters are further complicated when Joanna misdiagnoses the Keen's colicky baby whose father, mentally ill Roger, is the man who worked for the deceased Hilton and whom DI Jackson suspects of the killing. Later, Paul and Ken Jackson are furious when they learn of Marty's involvement in the accidental shooting because Roger Keen is clearly volatile and mentally unstable. Whilst in police custody, Roger's baby son is rushed to hospital and is taken to see him. Back at the police station he has a relapse and is committed again, despite being cleared of murder. Paul returns home to confront Marty and in the heated row that follows, Marty blames him for killing his mother Celia! Joanna calls round and has a go at Dangerfield for getting involved in the baby case and refuses his invitation for a drink to talk about it.
Paul Dangerfield promises to keep a deadly secret - for 24 hours. Stephen Millwood, an old patient of Paul's, is accused of committing arson to claim the insurance money to support his family. Arrested for murder and arson, Stephen tells Paul that he admitted to the crime that his wife Angie really committed. Stephen tells Paul he has AIDS but his first concern is his daughter Sophie, who is about to take an important exam. He persuades Dangerfield to speak to an unconvinced Ken Jackson to get him bail so he can return home. Meanwhile, concerned father Mr Heath brings his daughter Clare to the surgery and demands that she is seen immediately. Later, at school, Clare collapses and is rushed to hospital, where her pregnancy is revealed but the foetus is in the wrong place. She insists her father is not told the truth but it could spell trouble for the practice, when Mr Heath threatens to sue. The first of a two-part story. Paul Dangerfield is called to examine suspected rape victim Diane Foster. A man called David Walsh is pulled in on the charge and is represented by Paul's girlfriend, solicitor Kate Durrani. Soon the tension grows between Paul and Kate through their differing views of the case. Meanwhile, Ken Jackson puts pressure on Paul to come up with some firm forensic evidence to nail David Walsh.
The second part of a two-part tale. Diane Foster, the suspected rape victim, has been attacked again and Dangerfield is called back to the hospital to re-examine her. DI Ken Jackson is convinced that David Walsh committed the crime and Paul is called to court to give evidence. Unfortunately his girlfriend Kate Durrani is acting as solicitor for Walsh - and Dangerfield realises, in time, that he has made an ethical error which puts his relationship with Kate, and the case as a whole, at risk.
When it emerges that heart attack victim William Burford has videotaped a murder, Paul Dangerfield and Ken Jackson are faced with a complex moral dilemma. Deciding it best to protect the dead man's wife Lesley and their kids Claire and Michael because he was clearly a 'Peeping Tom', Jackson destroys the videotape. However his actions come back to haunt him when he later learns from Paul that a murdered woman, Susan Wainwright, might have been on the video. Meanwhile closer to home, Alison is worried about her brother Marty and heads off to Wales to find him.

Elsewhere, the police are called in to a domestic argument involving father and daughter Clifton and Sonia Hilliard. Clifton is arrested and put in a cell for the night but Sonia is reluctant to reveal why her father beat her. In a desperate attempt to clear his name and save his career, Ken turns to Dangerfield and forensics expert Terri Morgan to unearth a crucial piece of evidence which tragically links the Hilliards to the arrogant Mason. Meanwhile Alison is settling in at college and Marty's new job is revealed - he's a dish-washer!
When a tree is uprooted in a storm, a skeleton is found and Terri Morgan has to use all her expertise to try and find out who he is. Housewife Linda Barton soon becomes the prime suspect although strangely, she seems more interested in getting her elderly mother Helen Thomas committed than helping the Mid-Warwickshire police find her ex-husband Colin who walked out on her years ago. Later the police discover that Helen was a battered wife and killed her husband in later life when he became ill. The discovery of his body brings the past back to Linda about the suffering her mother had to endure at the hands of her father. When he disappeared, her mother told her he had left them but she had, in fact, buried him after poisoning him. Convinced it's the only way to stop her mother being charged with his murder, Linda sets about trying to have Helen committed before the law catches up with her. Doctors Roz Parker and Joanna Stevens differ in opinion when they see travelling youngster Rich Collins come in with bruises. Believing Rich to have been abused by his obnoxious stepfather Gerry, DI Ken Jackson sets about trying to nail the man. However, when Dangerfield and Joanna team up to help Jackson crack the case, she becomes the victim of a stalker. Believing Gerry Collins to be the guilty party, Jackson puts him on constant surveillance, only to discover that the culprit is a lot closer to home.
Doctors Joanna Stevens and Roz Parker wrestle with a moral dilemma involving the murder of businessman Geoff Hart, found burnt to a crisp in his car in dense woodland. Hart's daughter Susan confesses to Roz during surgery that she murdered him but Roz refuses to tell the police declaring confidentiality is of prime importance in her job. Joanna and Dangerfield plead with her to divulge what she knows and when DI Ken Jackson finds out that Roz is withholding evidence, he puts pressure on her to spill the beans by threatening to arrest her. This still doesn't change stubborn Roz's mind and it falls to Dangerfield to end up persuading Susan to confess. She eventually does but by a twist of fate, so does her mother Jenny in a bid to cover up her daughter's involvement in the crime. DI Ken Jackson's personal and professional worlds collide when a dark secret from his past comes to light. His colleague, DI Archie Bond, turns up at a police benefit boxing match with a young woman called Crystal and Ken is clearly stunned by her presence. He obviously knows the escort girl - but how? Sgt Keith Lardner is concerned when Ken seemingly becomes obsessed with Crystal and asks Dangerfield to have a word with him. However, Ken is giving nothing away and Dangerfield is left thinking that the girl could be connected with the detective's shady past in the Vice Squad. Then matters come to a head when a case of TB is uncovered at the surgery, but sufferer Gerald Norland seems reluctant to prepare a list of people he may have infected by close contact. Joanna Stevens then goes to treat Crystal's baby Emma and realises that the escort has TB also. As the TB is fairly isolated, she puts two and two together and realises that her patient was the one who infected Gerald Norland.
A body is uncovered while Environmental Health remove barrels of toxic waste from the local quarry. The only clue to the victim's identity is the waterlogged patchwork quilt wrapped around the body. Watching the news, the victim's glamorous mother Miriam Lampter recognises the quilt and informs the police that the victim is her missing son James. During their enquiries, DI Jackson and his team soon discover that James was a closet homosexual and having an affair with married Nigel Goss. Initially their prime suspect, Goss is let off the hook when Jackson realises he's innocent but it's not long before the wily detective focuses his attentions on the Lampter family, in particular James' brother Daniel, with shocking results. When the body of SAS officer Tom Sunderland is found in a shallow grave, DI Ken Jackson becomes caught up in a messy love triangle involving Sunderland's wife Lucy and his best friend, fellow army officer Sean Brook. As the dead man's GP, Joanna finds herself increasingly involved in the case when she realises that only weeks before, Sunderland told her his wife was out to kill him. Was Sunderland the victim of a crime of passion or was he simply delusional and suffering from paranoia? It's a sad day for the Dangerfields as the family, along with Joanna, attend Alison's boyfriend Ben's funeral. Alison is inconsolable and blames herself for his death. To assuage her grief, she gets drunk and hysterically throws herself at one of Ben's friends. Meanwhile, Marty walks out on his job as a dishwasher and makes a conscious decision to go back to university and study disabled sports.
Dangerfield becomes involved in the case of his long-time patient, businessman Patrick Hooper, when he leaves his wife Margaret to embark on a new relationship with attractive Caroline White. However, Hooper claims to Dangerfield that Caroline has been receiving threatening letters from an allegedly unhinged Margaret and as a result, Paul asks a reluctant Joanna to try and find out whether Margaret is showing signs of mental instability. Later, events take a tragic turn as Hooper's mistress Caroline is killed. DI Ken Jackson and his team find themselves in the middle of a sinister family triangle as both Margaret and the Hoopers' son Thomas end up as prime suspects in Caroline's murder - however, all is not what it appears and with the help of forensics expert Terri Morgan, the police discover that the blame lies in an unexpected quarter.

Dangerfield finds himself in an awkward situation when his aid worker friend Mary Blanchard asks him to look after an illegal immigrant, young orphan Adriana, whose family were wiped out by a bomb in Bosnia. Agreeing to help out temporarily, Paul introduces her to Alison and Marty, the latter whom demands £4 an hour to take care of her while Dangerfield is at work! When Joanna meets Adriana, she bonds with the little girl immediately and the two soon become inseparable, so much so that when Adriana wanders off by herself and gets caught shoplifting, Joanna and Paul have the same idea of passing her off as their niece when DI Jackson suggests calling in social services. Later Mary returns and informs Joanna and Paul that she has to take Adriana back to Bosnia but Joanna, still very keen on the youngster, agrees to look after her for a longer period. Following the death of his wife, William Ashurst, an old friend of Paul Dangerfield's father, returns to the area of his childhood. Initially regarded with suspicion by the residents of the Foxwood estate, their worst fears are soon realised when Ashurst's dog bites one of the local children. Paul suddenly finds himself embroiled in an increasingly volatile situation as he defends the old man's actions.

Paul Dangerfield investigates a supposed cot death and deals with the baby's emotional mother. Dangerfield examines a cot death at a remote farmhouse and finds the baby died in mysterious circumstances. Events reveal that the mother couldn't have killed the baby, so the search is on for the missing father.
During Dangerfield's examination of Jayne Sharman it transpires that she was raped six weeks earlier. By an apparent coincidence, one of Dr Robbins' patients, who is recovering from hepatitis, was also raped. Then Jayne is rushed to hospital with hepatitis. The police suspect a link between the two cases, but with one victim dying and the other refusing to give evidence, they have difficulty in bringing the case to court.
Not even motherhood has clamed young Al Dangerfield. She still thinks she knows best but, as usual, ends up regretting it. When she sees a young Serbian, Dejan, beaten on the street of Warwick, Al steps in to help him. A passionate relationship begins and Al refuses to accept any criticism of her new-found friend, least of all from her father. But there's much more to Dejan than meets the eye, as Al's forced to realise. Out of compassion, Dangerfield's daughter Al takes into her home Dejan, a young man who has been brutally beaten up. But Dangerfield becomes suspicious and asks DS Diamond to check him out.

Paul Dangerfield is working on the case, but Brian is a close pal so he has to tread a fine line between friendship and professionalism. Dangerfield is called upon to confirm the death of a young drowning victim. When it transpires that the woman was a work colleague of his friend Brian Taylor, the police and Brian's wife Barbara suspect there was more to the relationship.
When Val Massey is involved in a car accident, she finds the other victim is a criminal who seizes the moment and flees from prison custody. Worried about Val, Dangerfield pays her a visit and finds the household being held hostage and himself staring down the barrel of a shotgun.
A car is dragged from a river containing the body of Ben Stratton. Alice Stratton identifies her husband, but when Dagley and Diamond call on Alice for further questioning they find she has disappeared.
Nicola and Richard Gresham, are the parents of a young woman who's been murdered. With the help of their daughter's boyfriend, Adam, they help police to stage a reconstruction of her last movements. But, as often happens, the murderer is close by, and it's not long before trusty pathologist Paul figures out whodunit. After killing his girlfriend Hannah, Adam lies to the police saying a previous boyfriend has been following her and blames him for her disappearance. A press conference is called asking for help in finding Hannah, but Dangerfield is not sure that Adam is telling the truth.
A drunken teenager held in a cell collapses and is taken to hospital where he is assumed to have taken a drugs overdose. It later emerges he has meningitis and a desperate race ensues to find all the people who have been in contact with him.
Dr Paige (Nigel Havers) makes his first appearance when on of his patients, a fading pop star with cancer, dies from a suspected overdose. The initial evidence points to suicide but Dangerfield believes someone ‘helped' the dead man on his way…and Paige is chief suspect. An apparent case of euthanasia finds Dangerfield in the awkward position of suspecting an old friend and colleague, Dr Jonathan Paige. During the post mortem, Dangerfield discovers an injection mark on the body and all the evidence turns to Dr Paige, who denies any involvement in his friend's death.
Get your hankies out and bid farewell to Paul Dangerfield, the pathologist. Al ties the knot and, Dr Jonathan Paige is now the main man. Dangerfield witnesses the happiest day of his daughter's life, unaware of the bombshell to come. Dangerfield is called out to a serious road accident and during the investigation becomes the victim of a disturbed woman. And there's another shock in store for him on Al's wedding day. A hi-jacking goes wrong for an innocent motorist, when his car is run off the road, as the gang make their getaway and his van bursts into flames, before he can be rescued. The bands are read as Al prepares for her wedding to Ross but Paul gets called away. Al comments she hopes he'll switch off his mobile on the day of her wedding. Brennan, the driver of the hi-jacked truck later goes to make a statement but he passes out and Dr Dangerfield is called in to examine him. Dr Jonathan Paige takes over from Paul Dangerfield as the police surgeon and meets new DI Gillian Cramer. A well-loved local farmer is found dead and the team look towards his stormy family life for an explanation… An army recruit, home on leave, confesses to the murder of his brother following an argument between the two at a fairground. However, when he is called to the station to help with another case, Paige learns the truth.
After a punch-up in a pub, debonair Dr Paige helps patch people up. One drinker is in a very bad state and what he has to say gives the doc even more cause for concern… A fight and a fire break out in a pub. One witness is brought in for assaulting a woman constable. He is suffering from a head injury and is haunted by violent flashbacks during which he sees a dead man. Paige investigates.
Paige assesses a young man, Kevin Wilson, who has been brought to the police station for his own protection and discovers he is a schizophrenic and aggressive towards his mother. However, Mrs Wilson insists she can control her son and Paige releases him – a decision he comes to regret when Mrs Wilson's body is found the next day.
Paige's request to section a man who claims to have killed his allegedly adulterous wife comes up against pressure from the police, who want to question the suspect.
When the body of an artist is found by an art critic, the dead woman's agent, Beth Saunders, is taken to the station for questioning. Meanwhile, Dr Jonathan Paige is forming a friendship with Beth, which does not go unnoticed by DI Gillian Cramer.
Local composer and cellist Brian James, a patient known to the practice, becomes the prime suspect when his young female neighbour is found strangled. Meanwhile, the pressures of work are starting to take their toll on Shaaban.
Paige's son, Charlie, arrives back for the weekend a day early at the police station, after being involved in a brawl outside a bowling alley. Meanwhile, David, a friend of Charlie's, is struggling to keep hold of his farm, while organising a rally against government interference in the farming industry.
Anna Harris a mum of a teenage girl in a vegetative state, calls Dr Jonathan Paige to examine her. But from there unfolds an uncharacteristically spiritual storyline, involving healing, angels and stigmata. Paige is called out when two boys discover the body of a man who appears to be dressed like an angel. Although DS Diamond receives a call which clears up the mystery surrounding the man's death, later events convince Paige that things aren't as they appear.
Despite the best intentions, the caring approach isn't always appreciated. Dr Paige is called out to a nasty accident scene where he tends a woman who's fallen off a ladder. She dies while receiving treatment and her husband Dave is inconsolable. He accuses Dr Paige of not doing his job properly but it's not his fault. The debonair doc and his new lady love give a dinner party for the gossips at the surgery. When Liz Franklin falls to her death, her husband becomes strangely withdrawn. Dr Paige is convinced Dave is suffering from anxiety attacks, but he won't accept help. When Dave's son Jason calls for Paige's assistance, he decides to investigate further.
A gruesome discovery by the local publican's daughter reveals a tangled web of secrets and lies for Dr Paige and DI Cramer. Seems there's a serial blackmailer at work in leafy Warwickshire. All seems well in the village of Thornton until Mrs Bennett finds out her husband is having an affair, Mr Newman is found dead hanging from a tree and a six-year-old boy goes missing. Incriminating letters have been sent to all three households and Diamond takes on the case of finding out who is sending them while Paige and Cramer join forces to look for the missing boy.
Violent events at a supposedly ‘safe-house' where a lone gunman has infiltrated, leaves one police officer dead as he attempts to kill a protected witness. He then blasts DI Gillian Cramer but can Dr Jonathan Paige save her? Dr Paige and DI Cramer are called out to assist Pc Lyle when a small-time crook-turned-super grass whom the police have been guarding causes a commotion.
Continues from the last episode, in which DC Joe Christian was killed and DI Gillian Cramer was shot and wounded. While Gillian hovers between life and death, Dr Paige tries hard to look pleased when his girlfriend Beth tells him she's moving and will be living closer to him, but she's beginning to suspect that his heart lies with Gillian.
