Wow, I forgot how corny the writing and acting was in this. This is definitely first and foremost a drama with a splash of crime. The acting is completely over the top, surprisingly so as some of the actors in it were well known in the UK for the time. I'm glad Wendy Gifford was only in 3 episodes as I don't think I could stand her dreadful performance every time. Dalgliesh's internal thoughts coming out like private speech bubbles are completely unnecessary. The viewer should be able to understand the plot points which these spell out. And if they don't, the programme isn't doing it's job properly. Stereotypical bent local DI Doyle, who tampers with evidence and distrusts top brass from out of town. Some things completely don't make sense. Why is it Lorimer's fault that his cousin asks for a loan for place with her friend and he refuses? Why should he help pay her out? Nonsense, dig your own hole and expect to get out of it yourself! If you can't afford it, don't get it!
This series is a complete mess. It's like the person that wrote it had a romantic idea of a CSI and no touch on reality. Old fashioned, even in its day. I remember The Black Tower being good. Now upon watching this, I'm not so sure it will be.
