2004x01 Drain the Ocean

Discovery Channel Embarks On a Virtual Expedition to DRAIN THE OCEAN For an Unprecedented View of What Lies Beneath

Digital ocean mapping and CGI technology vividly illustrate the mountains, plains, canyons and creatures of the deep as never seen before, revealing a world of almost unimaginable scale right here on Earth -

The oceans cover three-quarters of our planet, hiding a whole other world beneath the waves. If we could pull an imaginary plug at the bottom of the sea and, layer by layer, expose the majesty and mystery of what lies beneath, we would be astounded.

Narrated by Avery Brooks (STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE) and combining the latest scientific data with state-of-the-art CGI computer hardware plus specially written software, this innovative and visually striking special drains the water from the oceans to reveal the mountains, canyons, plains and volcanoes that are more dramatic than anything visible on dry land.

The ocean is the last frontier and images of the deep are only glimpsed in the lights of a submarine or ROVs (remotely operated vehicles), with most of this undersea world having never known the light of the sun. Leading international scientists and institutes in the field of oceanography and marine science join in this quest to lay bare the landscapes of the deep and share their experiences and ideas about what this mysterious world might look like.

Deep water corals that rival an urban skyline in size, a submerged canyon that is bigger than the Grand Canyon, a mountain range that runs for 65,000km - all these features have only been known in recent decades and while exploring these fascinating landscapes, scientists have discovered life forms that they had no idea existed - or could exist - in these bizarre, hostile environments.

Combining CGI with cutting-edge digital ocean-mapping technology, leading oceanographers and geologists re-create the spectacular formations growing and shifting below the waves of the world's oceans. T

In February, 1950, a U.S. Air Force bomber carrying a nuclear bomb went missing off the coast of British Columbia. More than half a century later, a Canadian expedition team travels to the remote mountain crash site in the hope of solving the mystery of the world's first lost nuclear weapon.

In 1886 Robert Louis Stevenson wrote a best selling book, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It told the terrifying story of the power of addiction and the monsters that lurk within us all. It became an instant success and changed the face of horror stories forever. It was the first time that literature had depicted evil residing in someone rather than an objective character, a creature. In the novel Henry Jekyll, a respected doctor, concocts a potion to release his inner evil and becomes Mr Hyde.

It was a book surrounded in mystery. Robert Louis Stevenson had been known as the charming author of beloved children's stories such as a Child's Garden of Verses. What could this mild-mannered man know of inner demons and the power of evil and addiction?

But just as Dr Jekyll had two faces, so to did Stevenson. He had been obsessed, since childhood, with the notorious Scotsman William Deacon Brodie (known as Deacon), a legendary sociopath who lived 100 years earlier. By day, Deacon was a gentleman, a respected citizen with wealth and power. By night he was a compulsive gambler, sex addict and a criminal.

In this film, the true story of Robert Louis Stevenson is revealed. A brilliant but tortured soul, Stevenson was born into a wealthy Victorian family. A sensitive and sickly child, plagued by nightmares and lung disease. He was raised by a God-fearing spinster nurse who attended to his spiritual health and administered what became a life long regime of drugs. It was her stories of Deacon that planted the seeds of a dark obsession.

At 9.00am on 19 February 1945, the soldiers of the United States Marine Corps 5th Division, H Company lowered themselves down rope cargo nets into landing crafts rocking in five-foot seas. They were less than a mile from the shore of the remote Pacific island of Iwo Jima. H Company was made up mostly of 18 to 20-year-old boys who had been training for this day for over a year. For most of them, Iwo Jima was their first time in combat. The boys knew little of the island. They had seen mock-ups in briefings but nothing could have prepared them for what lay ahead on the black sand beaches of 'Iwo'.

See the huge labrynth of underground tunnels Hitler ordered built to keep the Nazi war machine running.

The film enters the world of a real-life alien - the praying mantis - and shows the life cycle and behavior of the most formidable and rarest representatives of the mantis family, including several that have never been filmed before.

World-wide, there exist some 2,200 species of this bizarre insect family, most of them in the subtropical and tropical zones, a few in the temperate zones of the Old an the New World. Wherever they live and whatever their size, they share one gruesome feature: Every mantis is a perfect killing machine, a living steel trap. Anything but prayerful, mantises prey on everything that moves and can be overwhelmed. This macro documentary shows the life cycle and behavior of the most formidable and rarest representatives of the mantis family, including several that have never been filmed before.

This is a documentary, going into a specific plot to kill Hitler. A group of experts try to recreate the events, and test two variations on it, to see how close the people actually came to succeeding. It consists of the experiment, old footage from the period and recreations. They give some basic background to the attempt, and there's plenty of info about it, the room, the placement of the target, etc. They also show the actual explosions that they cause(all in the interest of historical exploration, of course).

At 55-77 cm (1.8-2.5 ft) long from its nose to the tip of its tail, Microraptor was among the smallest known dinosaurs. Aside from its extremely small size, Microraptor was among the first non-avian dinosaurs discovered with the impressions of feathers and wings.

Three specimens of M. zhaoianus have been described in detail, in addition to six specimens of M. gui described by Xu et al. in 2003, from which most feather impressions are known. Unusual even among early birds and feathered dinosaurs, Microraptor is one of the few known bird precursors to sport long flight feathers on its feet as well as its forearms and hands. Their bodies had a thick covering of feathers, with a diamond-shaped fan on the end of the tail (possibly for added stability during flight).

Some specimens demonstrate a raised feather "crest" on the head, similar to some modern birds, like the Pileated Woodpecker. Bands of dark and light present on some specimens may indicate color patterns present in life. Several anatomical features found in Microraptor, such as a combination of unserrated and partially serrated teeth with constricted 'waists', and unusually long upper arm bones, are shared with both primitive avians and primitive troodontids.

In this fascinating documentary special we uncover the secrets of Ancient Egypt Pharaoh, engineers and architects and bring to life great buildings and the ancient Egyptians saw them - towering over their great civilisation in the history of Africa, and perhaps the World....

On July 20th 1944, a select group of senior German officers made a daring attempt to assassinate their leader, Adolf Hitler. WHO WAS CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS?
The answer to this deceptively simple question is undergoing a sea change. The rote response based on dusty, if questionable, documents in Genoa and recited in primary schools in the Old World and New is that Cristoforo Colombo, born in 1451: was an Italian ,was the son of lowly wool-workers, and therefore uneducated as well as lacking in experience in seamanship had legions of relatives in his hometown Genoa, none of them noble.

Historians and scientists questioning Columbus' heritage have put modern forensic techniques to work to help answer questions. Perhaps the most critical is DNA testing performed this year on bones that are believed to be those of Christopher Columbus, as well as remains from Columbus' son (Hernando) and brother(Diego).
Annunciada Colon, Columbus' direct descendent, handed over the key to a burial chest, disinterred from the Cathedral in Seville, Spain, that is reported to hold Columbus' bones. But there is debate about whether Columbus' body which was moved repeatedly over the centuries actually rests there.

Dr. Antonio Lorente of the University of Granada in Spain, a specialist in forensic genetics, is attempting to compare the genetic material from the three sets of remains to see if he can prove that this is Columbus.
