Phil Mallory is a bored forest watcher on Kelly Mountain. Although he knows he must stay in his tower to look for other fires, Phil longs to fight fires. Not far away, a major fire is burning, and a crew of other Forest Service workers are fighting it. When lightning strikes near Phil's station and starts a small fire, he goes out to investigate.
Alvin Fernald is a sixth-grader who wants to win an essay contest in his class. He is able to get an interview with the mayor, but while waiting in City Hall, Alvin and his friend, Shoie, hear something much more interesting.

The first special opens with the 1950 TLA short, ""Beaver Valley"": Beavers at work and play mixed with clever narration and mostly comical music. The main feature is Disney's science-fiction/fantasy masterpiece, ""20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"" (1954). Three survivors of a deadly shipwreck find refuge aboard the Nautilus, a fantastic submarine thought by many to be some sort of unnatural monster. On board, Professor Arronax, his assistant, Conseil, and sailor Ned Land end up playing a cat and mouse game of escape with the Nautilus' leader, a half-crazed genius named Nemo.
