Second episode and I'm still not feeling it. I can't remember exactly but were the other doctor's THIS kooky... maybe it's cause she's a woman after all... Maybe I do not enjoy kooky women as much as I do strong, intelligent ones. Is that sexist or just my prefered type that I've been grown to like ever since my birth... I'll have to reflect on that!
A lot of scenes also seem to be a bit too simple, there are numerous occassions where the characters are explaining things that are going on to the viewer: we're tired so I'll guess we'll show yawning people, there's no way out so I guess I'll shout out there's no way out, we're on a strange planet... yes look we're on a strange planet, don't let those things that just suffocated me touch you cause they'll suffocate you! And on and on and on. Especially the grandad character seems to like a lot of explaining.
It's a slow start... they'll get there (I hope).
I'm very pleased to say that I really loved this! As much as I enjoyed the premiere, it didn't fully feel like a Doctor Who episode to me. This one, however, absolutely did. I think it captured the essence of the show perfectly.
Something that Chibnall does very skillfully is create an engaging mystery that really draws you in. I was on the edge of my seat for a big part of the episode, waiting to find out what happened to the population of the planet. And what do you know, it looks like the Stenza are going to be a recurring theme this season! I'm curious to see how that will play out. And what - or who - could the timeless child be?
One of the strongest points of this season is the cinematography. Some of the wide shots that we got in this episode looked like they belonged in a Star Wars movie. And the music is excellent as well. It's kind of subtler than what I've gotten used to with Doctor Who, but it's lovely. The new composer is doing a great job.
Another strong point is obviously the acting. While I do think that Jodie, just like every Doctor, will need a few episodes to fully come into her own, I love everything she's given us so far. The quick wit, the quirks, the boundless energy, the enthusiasm and the charm that she brings to the role - it's all exactly right. And I'll be honest, the emotional moments in this episode really got me. Her face when she saw the hologram of the Ghost Monument and realized it was the TARDIS! And the reunion was so soft and gentle and wonderful! I actually cried happy tears when she said "You've done yourself up! Very nice". I adore Thirteen. And the companions are growing on me too. I like the interactions between the three of them and the Doctor. I can't wait to see these individual dynamics develop over the course of the season.
The opening credits are awesome. I've never seen the classic series, but the theme has a very retro vibe to it and I like the color scheme. It looks like a kaleidoscope. I dig it.
And finally, the TARDIS! She's redecorated all right! The interior looks more organic, kind of like Nine's and Ten's were. I liked the sleek, mechanical designs of the Moffat era, but this one is so appropriately alien. The biscuit dispenser is a cute little touch, especially considering that they put it there as a gift to Jodie and packed it with her favorite custard creams.
Overall, I thought this was a really great episode. Now that we have the TARDIS back, I'm excited to see what adventures await us.
I like the new theme tune. It's understated, but intriguing, but also too short.
So if they weren't saved, the doctor and her companions would have died in space?
It's a slower paced episode formula than usual, in the past two episodes.
The cliche of guns missing their shots even though they're close.
I love the tardis redesign, but i don't like the doctor didn't do the redecoration herself. It's always been that the previous doctor (usually) redecorated the tardis themselves. The only exception 10 after 9.
The redesign looks alien, and looks more like 9/10's tardis interior design than the others, and 9/10s tardis interior is my favorite.
Some things are off with these episodes though.
Maybe it's just the range of things that are different. The cinematography, music, writing. They're all quite different than the standard formula we've been used to. It will help the transition if we have more solid episodes to work with.
Jodie Whittaker's Doctor wearing button braces/suspenders proves that she is infinitely more stylish than Matt Smith's Doctor.
I'm not gonna lie. I did get a bit teary eyed when the Tardis came back. And she looks gorgeous, too!
I do not like the new look of the Tardis. My son says it looks like the Crystal room in the movie Dark Crystal.
These first two episodes already feel stronger to me than new season 10 did in total for some reason.
Seems like someone was hitting the good kush when they came up with that TARDIS design... awful. Pretty boring episode, nothing really happened, predictable dialogue, too many conveniences and inconsistencies compared to normal. Killer rags? Surely you can come up with something better than that Chib. The new intro isn't as bad as I was thinking so kudos there; Although I'm not a fan of having the director credits in the intro. Jodie seems to be overacting a lot of the time but I'm chalking that off to new doc jitters. Hoping it picks up next week.
Was it just me that watched the last part of the episode in another tv/monitor just to check if the tardis was really that dark?
For a moment i thought i needed a new screen, fortunately it was just the new tardis
making a show that both satisfies both children and adults on intellectual and fun level is really difficult. For me and my kids this didn't. their enthusiasm for the show has dropped and I guess mine has too. Does doctor who need to drop the pretense and target itself to an older age group?
This episode Starts with the doctor and her companions arriving on an alien planet known as Desolation after surviving the events of the previous episode.
The planet is a desert, covered in sand and the crew come across a tent with a hologram. This episode has a very dragging pace to it, but is still much better pacing than the first episode of the season had, and there is a bit more direction to this episode than the previous episode.
The crew encounter some holograms that are competing in a space-race to the ghost monument and are the final pilots in the race. The winner of the race gets transported off of the planet and the loser stays. behind.
The music really captures the feel and atmosphere of the episode.
Jodie’s Doctor is slowly growing on me, but the more I like her, the more I am disliking the companions., some of them are getting pretty annoying, especially Ryan.
His character is looking like he is going to be the idiot of the series, and is going to make the other characters smarter and more likeable by comparison.
Overall, this episode has much more direction and plot than the previous episode, and also unlike the previous episode, this one was not 90% filler. It’s still very slow though, so hopefully it picks up a bit soon.
6.5/10
For some reason (=many reasons) this was one of the worst DW episodes ever for me. Boring, dull, recycled. And sorry but the new companions are horrible, there's literally zero chemistry between them and the Doctor and I don't think that will change.
I'm not hating, I'm quite shocked because so far I loved them all (more or less). Anyway, Jodie is great and I wish her the best to become great Doctor, and who knows, maybe even my Doctor :)
This new season really is very cinematic, I love it! Great second episode! The reunion with TARDIS was emotional and I like how it redecorated itself. Also that new cookies feature is very cool xD
Did anyone notice that although there were 3 suns, people only cast one shadow?
is it just me or is the doctor really hard to understand? Well that's what subs for ;-)
That was fun.
The new Tardis is almost perfect. I've wanted a more steampunk interior for a long time. My favorite to date is the interior from the 1996 movie. My only complaint about this new one is that there's no piston-like moving cylinder at the center of the console.
What exactly was the point of this episode?
Amazing episode and OMG the Tardis is just amazing!! Really love it, can't wait to see what adventures they'll have
A decent episode. Love the ending scene.
Just finished watching this amazing show!
Great to see the new team work together to make things happen.
Good to see Graham connect with his Step Son even though he doesnt want Graham to connect with him.
Can't wait to see if we get to meet those two "racers" again as they obviously wanted to bring the doctor and the others with them
Anyways this was an amazing second episode of Dr Who more than what I expected with this episode and I'm hoping to see more!
P.S: Loving that new Tardis Design.
