Happy New Year, everyone!
I know that I'm in the minority when I say that I genuinely liked series 11. For starters, I found the overarching storyline a lot more coherent than a large chunk of Moffat's era. And I thoroughly enjoy Jodie's Doctor. She's bright and quirky and fun and she's got that oh-so-Doctory, slightly unhinged glint in her eye. I absolutely can't wait for her to finally snap Time Lord Victorious-style because I have no doubt that she's gonna do it brilliantly. The companions have grown on me too, as all of their predecessors did. Was last season perfect? No, it wasn't. But did I vibe with it? Yes, I did. I know there are a lot of edgy fanboys out there who'd love to explain to me that it was in fact garbage and the worst thing in the history of everything, but you can pry my enjoyment from my cold, dead hands. It's a lot more fun to like things, even if I see their flaws.
Anyway, I really liked this episode! I felt the mystery was quite compelling, there was a good mix of action, suspense, comedy and drama, and the score was REALLY good. The companions are coming into their own more and more - I particularly enjoyed Yaz and Ryan's scenes together. Jodie is exactly as chaotic and living her best life as I expected her to be, and I would absolutely die for her. And that reveal at the end? Just (chef's kiss) delicious. Can't wait for more!
Acting is only as good as the script that engine it...
That was bad.
Dr. Who has been on the decline.
This may be the final season for me.
Season 7 was the last Doctor I liked but I stuck around because i liked the companions, villains & story lines of seasons 8, 9 and 10.
Season 11 was meh, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt because it takes time to build up 4 new characters & backstories.
This first episode of season 12 was boring and the "action" scenes were Disney level. You know how they do it in Disney movies where things are happening, it all seems dangerous, but we all know that no one will get hurt or killed because 5 year old Timmy and Suzy is watching.
That's how it felt... action with training wheels and guard bumpers.
More like like Doctor Who than the last season. That seemed more interested in preaching agendas.
The companions are still rather boring though. It’s like they just were all cast for the sake of diversity. Rather than the actors being perfect companions for her. It feels more like, “you get role and you get a role.”
None of them are too developed and you don’t care if they die or not.
That was totally awesome. Completely surprised when it was revealed that it was the Master and he did a good job of it at that! Deranged, darkly, like the Joker.
Wow, what a great start of the season! I did accidentally read spoiler, but still the revelation of the Master was amazing.
Well, that was fun! I liked season 11 well enough, but this was still a clear improvement. Had a great sense of fun, what with the spy nonsense, plus the alien mystery was interesting and unpredictable. A strong start to the new season.
I particularly liked the Doctor in a tux ("Name's Doctor. The Doctor.") and the unexpected appearance of the Master, although I wish the mysterious aliens were not simply one of his plots. Yeah, if the season keeps up this sense of fun, we're in for a cool ride.
Oh yes. Very good. I see what you did there with Stephen Fry's line on meeting The Doctor:smirk:
I looked forward to seeing what Jodie could bring to Dr Who having enjoyed her acting in other tv series. Unfortunately, the writing and direction of the programme has gone to pot (I agree with Andrew that it started with Peter Capaldi story lines and he is an amazing actor!). Fingers crossed that for her sake and ours, there's been a shake up in this aspect!
That was absolutely brilliant omg.

I'd say it's a great series opener, great story and an amazing reveal at the end, well… a cliffhanger. It's meant to be an homage to the spies movie genre, it's a great story for a Series Premiere, it certainly looks like Chibnall is stepping up his game. The writing in this episode is better than the others he wrote during Series 11. It seems that he listened to our complaints. I don't know about you, but to me, the alien-lights-from-another-reality look a lot like "the Boneless" aliens the Doctor send to another dimension ("Flatline" – Series 8) a few years ago. Or maybe it's another species? I don't know. What do you guys think? It was sad to hear, within the episode, that both Torchwood and U.N.I.T. are "officially" gone. Both groups had been, historically, great assets to the Doctor's work on Earth. I don't know, maybe Chris Chibnall shouldn't be closing those doors just yet. There's room for them. And the amazing revelation: THE MASTER'S BACK. Man, Chibnall wasn't joking when he said he'd be bringing back many "classic" villains. Well, I'm glad the reveal didn't go up online or something because it was amazing! Shit. I just love that crazy motherfucker. Glad he's back. Even though it was stated that Missy died during the Series 10 finale and couldn't regenerate due to the "full blast-thing" from her previous incarnation, it's possible that this version of the character is one of the incarnations between John Simm's version and Michelle Gomez's. Because we didn't see him regenerate. That could work. Or maybe is a previous incarnation, before Roger Delgado's? Or maybe Missy found out a way to regenerate in spite of getting shot with a "full blast". I'm really curious to know how he's back. But I'm glad he is. Yeah!!!
This was a pretty good one, might be my favourite episode episode of the Chibnall era! (Perhaps at least tied with Kerblam! or the Dalek one)
It's nice to see the characters, and even the writers, just have the type of bonkers fun Doctor Who is known for. I don't want to spoil the ending (not even with spoiler tags haha) but I was so excited to be watching a two-parter. Great stuff!
Mixed bag. Most of the episode was absolutely pointless, but Sacha Dhawan as the Master was certainly a great addition and the most fun thing about this episode.
Okay, kids. 'Twas a good episode, a step up from previous series: fast paced, very Doctor Who-y, with a twisty little twist at the end but still.. maybe it's just me but it felt somewhat... empty? I don't know it's like something is missing and I can't understand what exactly.
"Doctor. The Doctor." <3 whittaker is amazing. loved the spy parallels and there was so much action, time flew! i think the master card was played a little too early and i didn't like this casting in particular, because we already knew he was going to be the villain and he was fine being his first character, but he lacks some kind of charisma that the master needs. anyhow, let's see how it all turns out, i'm excited about this season
Oh, that ending was brilliant!
Very unexpected and I'm looking forward to the continuation in the next episode and the remainder of series 12.
that was epic!! the last series was lacking something, but this episode was way beyond my expectations!! and the master reveal was the greatest plot twist EVER!
It feels... Clichéd, like the minute they set up the premise, the outcome is already determined.
The companions are /so/ flat and uninteresting, and the master in e1 trying to kill the doctor is a little.. Why do we care, tbh
(this comment is left here to commemorate starting the episode. I want to watch it because the series synopsis sounds exciting but I feel like I may not finish...)
(Stephen fry as C, control is v funny considering the recurring sketch in abofal)
Oh dear, what a mess... :o I once gave the first season a try but had to eventually give up as I couldn't take it anymore. I know people who like this show and was hoping that it would eventually get more serious/realistic and therefore better but now I don't think so and I'm glad that I didn't finish the first season / didn't try to watch the whole show from the beginning.
There's one good part though: The accents! I love British accents :D And it's also kinda nice that The Doctor is female now (since the last season?). However, unfortunately, The Doctor is still kinda dumb and somewhat naive. How can one live for hundreds of years on earth and still don't understand some things like casio games (she can easily win them but doesn't understand the feelings and reactions of the human players).
Overall, it still feels like total bullshit to me (no other way to say this, unfortunately). The aliens are super advanced (beyond anything they can comprehend yet) but unable to "kill" them. The alien stuff is the most ridiculous part for me but even other parts aren't scientific at all. E.g., during the motorcycle chase the bad guy constantly manages to hit their cycles but they don't get damaged and the bullets never hit the riders (neither directly nor indirectly). Sure, it's a TV show and even Sci-Fi but I'm kinda missing any science here... :o
A few somewhat fun quotes though like "Looking outside was actually quite low on my list."
But overall it's just too close to being rubbish for me. Sorry...
I'll probably give the second part a try to be fair but I don't think I'll finish this season either.
PS: And unfortunately the CGI still sucks as well... (I guess there isn't much budget? - or maybe they like that strange style - who knows...).
Glad to see the doctor back .. though, i feel the story could have been improved upon. Allas, ... Allons-y
I really hope the new season doesn’t suck as much as the last season...i also hope the new doctor did some serious soul searching & improved her acting.

I agree. I live Jodie Whitaker as an actress, but the writing and stories need to be better. Also, I don’t really care about the supporting cast so they add no emotional value. I think it is because there are too many of them. 2 companions, tops. Otherwise you cannot develop characters well, out the story lines will suffer trying to build character over creating a compelling story arc.
Writing suffered greatly at Capaldi and has not yet recovered.
