still the best doctor who season finale? everyone seems to think of the s4 finale as the best, but this takes the cake? martha reasserting herself as the BEST doctor who companion and showing her strength. she walked the earth for a whole YEAR and chose to leave the doctor despite loving him because she knew it was what was best for her. i love her so much. jack being the face of boe? iconic. david tennant's acting when john simm's master refuses to regenerate.... AN ACTOR. and the scene with everyone thinking about the doctor? the cgi/graphics are terrible mind you but what can be expected from an early 2000s show, but the meaning and sentiment behind the scene always gets to me. fucking epic dude i'm telling y'all
One of the best finale episodes. Martha saved the world and yet she's crimnally underrated. I also love how she was the only companion of them all to chose to walk away from The Doctor.
While I liked The Sound of Drums a whole hecking lot I did not expect the Last Time Lord as much as I did. I'll be the first to admit part of the finale are cheesy as hell. The Doctor literally becomes jesus resurrected by the thoughts of everyone on earth. But what can I sway put a sweeping Murray Gold score behind it and it moves me. But really it's quickly become my favourite of the RTD era finales.
The entire episode was great from top to bottom. I loved seeing the Jones' impacted by their year with the Master. You can really feel the effects of a year of vicious brutality on them especially with Mrs. Jones final standoff. I loved Simm's entire performance here. This episode had the best use of discordant peppy pop music contrastic brutality in his first scene galavanting in the Valiant. Plus he really roots the Master's madness to that endless drum beat ringing in his ear in such a compelling way. I loved the Master's companion Lucy. She's such a minor character but contrasting how hollowed out she is after seeing the ends of the universe with the wonder the Doctor's companions are imbued with (ie Donna in The Runaway Bride) was fascinating. The twist with the final humans from Utopia becoming mutilated destructive machives was especially horrific and disturbing. Just everything was brilliant from beginning to end.
But where the episode really shines is the resolution of the Doctor and the Master arc. I can count on one hand the episodes of Doctor Who that have moved me to tears in this rewatch and Last of the Time Lords easily joins those ranks. You can just feel the grief and loneliness pouring out pouring out of the doctor as the Master chooses to die. That final bit of spit to "win" their never ending conflict was equally brilliantly played by the Master. That one final cruelty. it's easily one of my favourite Tennant performances and one of my favourite moments of the series so far.
And the final cherry on an amazing finale was Martha. I've spent all of this season bemoaning how much I hate the way she was written. So seeing her finally leave after constantly being made to feel second best was such a victory. And the power lap she does throughout the entirely of the episode before that final scene was a delight to take in. Overall I still think Davies and the rest of the writers gave Martha a short shrift. Defining your first black woman companion entirely by being second best. Never allowing her to form any relationship with the doctor separate from that infuriating crush. It made for a really disappointing season. But I love her in spite of the failings of the writing. And I love seeing her get her time in the sun here and especially loved her being true to herself and leaving.
Tha face of Boe, they called me.

How can something so utterly nonsensical be so fucking epic and great?
