On its launch night (30th March 1997), Channel 5 broadcast the first episode of its original soap opera: Family Affairs. The series was Britain's first 5-days-a-week soap and has been broadcast every weekday since its launch. Family Affairs: The Hart Years (From Pilot to Episode 480)
The show followed the lives of the Hart family from Charnham, Kent, story lines surrounded Chris, Annie and their children Duncan, Holly, Melanie and Jamie Hart as well as Chris's father Angus, Annie's parents Elsa and Jack Gates and their friends and neighbours for 2 years. Friends and neighbours included Roy Farmer, Nick Trip and Maria Simons.
However, ratings were low and it wasn't long before Channel 5 threatened to axe Family Affairs. While Eileen and Lucy are settling in, Pete calls round. He and Eileen go for a walk and he tells her that he thinks he's falling in love with her. Chrissy tries in vain to get out of getting a job, she even tells Chloe that she doesn't think she's well enough to return to school so that she can stay at home to take care of her. Chrissy wasn't too happy about the arrangement either! In an attempt to get out of working evening shifts, and after learning that Pete is a buisiness man, she invites him and Eileen to dinner - thinking they're a couple. She soon stands corrected and Pete invites the Costellos to dinner with him in the pub. The truth about Tanya and Sean was finally revealed and rumors layed to rest, it turns out that she knew he was gay all along! They're only together because they both want to have a baby, but Sadie's put a spanner in the works there. She tells Sean that it would be a mistake - it could only end in tears. S

At work, Pete was planning the following night's dinner party for himself, Eileen and the Costellos. Dave warned Eileen not to get involved with Pete. In the meantime, Sadie let slip to Lucy that Eileen had known about her and Pete all along. On returning home, Eileen was comfronted by an angry Lucy who accused her of being just like Pete. Cameron is still out to get Jake. He approached Sean and Tanya who were eating at the café and told them that they were being served by a murderer. Roy warned him away. Sean and Tanya were invited to dinner at Nikki and Roy's place. Jake, meanwhile, ran into Cheryl who told him he'd done the right thing in changing his statement. Cheryl was lied to throughout the episode, by both Dave and Pete. Dave told her that Jake was still living at Geri's when in fact he's run away. Geri discovered that Dave didn't know where Jake was and we were reminded that Jake has to sign in with his parole officer on Thursday. Pete lied to Cheryl about Eileen's disappearance. Later, while drunk, he came clean with Sadie and told her that he'd ruined his last chance with Eileen, that he'd loved her all along and never meant to hurt her. Later, he told her that his feeling responsible for Eileen's departure didn't mean that he'd killed her, in fact he wanted to help Lucy find her mum. Lucy was undecided. Tanya found out from Dave that Sean had been having second thoughts about having a baby with her; he denied that he still had these feelings of doubt. Benji then told Tanya that Sean had spent the night with a man he'd met at the pub last Thursday, when she confronted Sean he told her that he'd slept on the man's sofa-bed - alone. With a little bit of persuading, she believed him and they decided that they both really wanted to have this baby. Chrissy told Gary and Myra that she though
