Stellar season premiere! This is going to be another fantastic season of Fargo.
"The title refers to the Samuel Beckett play Waiting for Godot, and to Ronald Reagan, occasionally nicknamed 'Dutch', who appears via archival footage. In the play, two characters - Vladimir (Didi) and Estragon (Gogo) - wait for the arrival of someone named Godot who never arrives, and while waiting they engage in a variety of discussions."
"Waiting for Dutch" is an absolute mess of an opener for this second season of Fargo. While there seems to be an interesting idea behind this screenplay, a fair amount of notable flaws plagued this premiere. For starters, poor editing was abundant and borderline obnoxious as the episode went on, with unnecessary split screens and ridiculously placed flashbacks for moments that had happened just minutes prior. Secondly, the acting all around ranged from decent to terrible, with Kirsten Dunst and Kieran Culkin giving the worst performances on this show to date, in my opinion. Another serious issue I had was the dialogue, which at times felt highly unnatural. I haven't even mentioned the ridiculous set-up yet, with Peggy (Kirsten) accidentally hitting Rye (Kieran) with her car and then driving back to her house with his body still hanging in the windshield. Not to mention, this was after Rye had spotted what appeared to be a UFO after he had murdered several people in a diner, in what was a poorly written and borderline laughable scene. In saying that, you do get the sense that behind this mess of a premiere, there is potential for at least a somewhat decent season ahead, given the setting.
Overall, this is a bad episode to begin a season. I was expecting a lot more, given how superb season one's opener was.
what a great start, with an amazing cast. this is my second watch through after it originally aired and i'm still amazed by its beauty
People of the Earth can you hear me?
Came a voice from the sky on that magical night
Looks like it's gonna be a good season.
In the first part it was very fatalities and started very well
Such a moody masterpiece of a first episode it almost feels like the movie
Nice to see Kieran Culkin; looking like a young Steve Buscemi in Reservoir Dogs. Which makes this feel like total Tarantino from the start. I never got passed the first episode of season 1. This season hooked me from the start though.
