"Waiting for Dutch" is an absolute mess of an opener for this second season of Fargo. While there seems to be an interesting idea behind this screenplay, a fair amount of notable flaws plagued this premiere. For starters, poor editing was abundant and borderline obnoxious as the episode went on, with unnecessary split screens and ridiculously placed flashbacks for moments that had happened just minutes prior. Secondly, the acting all around ranged from decent to terrible, with Kirsten Dunst and Kieran Culkin giving the worst performances on this show to date, in my opinion. Another serious issue I had was the dialogue, which at times felt highly unnatural. I haven't even mentioned the ridiculous set-up yet, with Peggy (Kirsten) accidentally hitting Rye (Kieran) with her car and then driving back to her house with his body still hanging in the windshield. Not to mention, this was after Rye had spotted what appeared to be a UFO after he had murdered several people in a diner, in what was a poorly written and borderline laughable scene. In saying that, you do get the sense that behind this mess of a premiere, there is potential for at least a somewhat decent season ahead, given the setting.
Overall, this is a bad episode to begin a season. I was expecting a lot more, given how superb season one's opener was.
