Well, that was disappointing. They should have taken a peek at The Leftovers to see how you properly end a season.
Honestly though, did Emmit really deserve to die?
When he took out the loan he had absolutely no idea Varga was a criminal mastermind. By the time he figured out he was in way, way over his head and really couldn't do anything about it. What was he supposed to do at that point? Anything he did, he would've got himself killed trying to do it.
The death of his brother was a complete accident.
He was a spineless wuss, but is that deserving of death?
Loved this episode. I agree this season was slower but it paid off in the end. The only thing I don't like is that Stussy died and Varga got to live.
Uneven season, uneven ending. I was on board with shifting the story throughout the season of crime and investigation to a philosophical plane, and at the end just basic 'light vs. dark', but I think this concept was stronger as an idea than what they could handle. (If anything, we know season 4 suffers the same fate even more than this one.) Characters becoming meaningless, like Sy Feltz, Nikki and Mr. Wrench jumping the middle of a whole fucking convoy without problem, or taking down almost every one of them in this episode (like mobsters who we have seen so far being experts of their job suddenly becoming sloppy?), Emmit driving away after his car breaking down, things like these. Nikki's ending was bitter, she couldn't stop, but it was nice of Mr. Wrench finishing the job as Emmit could not get away either. (I wonder if we ever see the fate of Mr. Wrench in a later season, if this one picked him so much and he is certainly not one to be free of this carmic justice either. Same goes for Meemo.)
Carrie Coon and Vargas emerging and taking their place of good and evil and how that leaves the ending ambigous, their sides of truth probably being a never ending battle is great, but it's a bit of a stretch. Not the going for a villain who is basically the devil, occasinally saying things that are tempting to sound true, that's great, but going for a hero who is an idealized version of a cop as opposed to being an authoritarian figure - bare with me, I'm strictly keeping it on how the idealization becomes false in the world of the show. At first she's not trying to uphold the status quo but to change it for the better, but then she just accepts that she's not allmighty, and stands in line to push back against Vargas like a busy bee, doing her job as always, except now armed with a cosmic belief as well. Not a belief that she can do extraordinary things, or that she can work outside of the law for her own gains and means, no. A belief that something outside of her will do things right and finish the job if she does her part.
As much as I remember from other seasons, in season 2 Lou and Hank were people who tried to understand what's happening and work alongside that. In season 1, Molly Solverson earned her victory as the underdog policewoman, but it's a whole different approach that Gloria and Winnie have to work tirelessly with nothing to show for, and then having Gloria go forward without achieving anything because things are always settled beyond her reach.
Gloria became the little 'I can help' robot, and that sounds nice and all, but that story had a huge downside as the robit did not realize how useless it is, because noone wants its help. It was more and more out of time and out of place. Gloria has more self awareness and comes to the conclusion that she thinks she doesn't exist. Gloria has intuition to be more than the robot and acknowledges that in God's eye everyone is the same and also how the world doesn't always makes sense. But she doesn't have more than that.
My confidence that she will ever succeed any bit working as a servant of light is just like the honeypot monologues of Vargas: tempting, maybe it is true, but its bad because people will constantly abuse it to get away with things and to sleep well at night. To Gloria it will be enough if Vargas goes to jail, she will not care further than that whereas Vargas would stomp her only because he believes only bad exists in the world. Gloria maybe acknowledges her role opposed to him on a greater scale, maybe not, but it doesn't matter because we have never seen her getting a milestone or a point where she can celebrate, only ones where she succumbs to the fact that things get done regardless of what she does. She's so self aware that she sees the accidental happenings of the entire Fargo universe. But she doesn't do or have any more than that.
They may be the perfect adversaries to eachother and that train of thought ending alone already makes the season special, but one of them was not established as much in this sense as the other and I don't think they are on the same level. Or if they are, it is only the beginning of something we will never get to see.
The creators sacrificed a lot to make this season work and when it does, it's amazing. But sometimes, it barely does.
"Somebody to Love" is a mixed finale of this third season of Fargo, leaving plenty of characters in its wake. While there was an acceptable amount of tension throughout this conclusion, there were also several contrivances that caused me to suspend disbelief, unfortunately. Most notably, the scene in which Emmit drives off after the standoff. Didn't Nikki sabotage his car? How could the writers overlook this? It was interesting to see Emmit's life back on track five years on, and his death came as a great shock, but why did Mr Wrench wait all that time? Aside from this, the final scene between Gloria and Varga was well-written and enjoyable, though the ambiguity left me somewhat unsatisfied in the end. I think personally that Varga never faced the consequences for his actions.
Overall, a mixed conclusion to a mediocre season.
Firstly, amazing as always. Score, acting, scenes, colour grading, shot setup ; the whole lot amazing and on point
.
Next, I'm seeing a lot of bad comments about the ending, come on, did you really expect to see who walked through the door? Get real. That was never going to happen. This was an awesome ending that just leaves us hanging.
Quite a disappointment. Too many convenient decisions and situations.
I have the benefit of watching this after watching Legion. Noah Hawley’s story telling is let loose in this season and it often heads into surrealist territory. A lot of questions are left unanswered at the conclusion of the season by design.
Everything is answered in the opening scene. It seems absurd right? But that, to a greater or lesser degree, is how we live in the modern world.
Around half way trough the season I wanted to stop but I kept going simply because I don't like to leave things half done.
In general disappointing end of the season, kinda waste of time to be honest
That drum beat when they step into the elevator is fantastic, had to rewind and turn up the volume.
This was my second watch since its original air date. Though this season is unlike season 2 (my favorite of the three), I still enjoyed it. Carrie Coon is a godess and i'll watch anything shes in.
I did like the ambiguity to the ending, with Gloria and V.M. Vargas waiting to see if someone showed up at the door. We all know they wouldn't.
How did Emmit drive away from the scene where Nikki died? He stopped there because his car failed. Good season but weak ending.
Meh. I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's so lacking compared to the previous two. The only thing it had going for it was VERY FEW good performances and scenes from the cast. But not enough to make it memorable.
carrie coon i've always loved you
This final episode perfectly summarizes how mean, cruel and just plain nihilistic (not just to the characters but to the audience as well) this season was. Even though most of the characters that died, you could think, had an unfair end, I think Stuhlbarg's character had what it deserved (I fucking hated his guts).
Great season overall.
The worst Fargo season so far and the last it seams ...
Fantastic end to a fantastic season. Engrossing from beginning to end.
Disappointing finale. I loved this season but writers as good as these have led us to expect more from an ending.
And yet another entertaining and well told story. Bravo season 3. Bravo seasons 1-3. Nothing better than clever writing, directing, superb acting, and unique stories.
Sad to see Nikki die, she was my favorite character this season.
Aaaand we'll never know why Varga forced himself to vomit, few episodes back.
who was the guy on the start of the pilot of this season?
Loved the whole season. Ewan McGregor did an amazing job portraying the Stussies. I think Emmit had to die to emphasize that people are greedy?

Sad to Nikki die. I wanted her to get her revenge. I'm also kinda bummed Emmit died too. Mr. Wrench must of really be fond of Nikki and who wouldn't be. Side note how did Emmit drive away after the shootout with the cop, I thought his car broke down right before that? I kind of like it that they left it on a cliffhanger letting us decide what happens. Do we root for evil, manipulating the truth to get the facts they want and getting away or do we root for the good, the truth is the truth and you can't change that.
I think the theme of the season between good and evil, truth and lies, Gloria and Varga was very interesting. Looking back on the beginning of every episode where its says "This is a true story" and then true goes away and then it is just story really hits on this theme. What is being told is it the truth or is it just a story? I always thought it was just funny they did this like the movie but it has some real meaning this season. Truth vs facts.
I went back and watched the first scene of the first episode and it was very similar to the last scene. A man is accused of killing his girlfriend and he denies it. He's not the same name or age but lives in the same location as the dead girlfriend's boyfriend. The cop doesn't believe his "story" because he has proof of where he lives and they need to pin this on someone. So which is true, the story or the facts? It ends where we don't know who "won" there just like the end of the season.
