My first reason to watch this show is because some screen cap at tumblr, Jessica (back then I didnt know her name yet) said "the garbage man is right, promote him into a garbage boss" and I was like "whaaaaat, is this an actual line from the show?" so I started watching it. After I saw the episode when Jessica said that line, I already in love with this show and of course Jessica, and decide to make this show my new fav. And then it start to become my coping mechanism, after a bad day or a shitty episode of another show, I watch this show
Decent comedy show with certain flashback potential if you were born in the 90's.
It's not necessarily good but it certainly is funny
Please change the start time to the actual time (8:30) instead of incorrectly stating 8pm.
Decent enough comedy series, starts of really well but starts to get a bit samey after a few seasons. While I really like Constance Wu (Jessica) she is overshadowed in the later seasons by her husband, kids, Grandma Huang and even the neighbours. It's not that Jessica gets any worse, merely that she only has one schtick: Hard disciplinarian caring only about money and self-improvement, spurning any form of fun, relentlessly pressurising her kids to do better, the gets all crestfallen and apologetic when her family show their resentment of her constantly overbearing attitude, period of repentance, then her methods are shown to be working in part & she's back to normal; then it's wash, rinse, repeat over and over again, it gets a bit tiresome so I start to tune out when she's on screen. By the time I got to S5/6 what I initially found amusing about her attitude and behaviour had completely worn off and I found I liked her character less and less, seeing her merely as an extremely selfish, self-centred and pretty dislikable person who repeatedly trots out lame excuses for her poor behaviour, just a kill-joy in every way. Still, as I said, decent enough, earlier season's were funnier IMO, it probably should not have run for 6 seasons though.
This series was a complete surprise and a good one at that! I stumbled on it by pure luck and I'm glad I did. The story of immigrants resonated with me even if I'm from a different continent entirely. The nostalgia from the 90's was refreshing to watch. no laughtrack so it's definitely a good choice.
My favorite feel good show. It's funny, corny, and delightful.
it's very bad. everything's so fake. just like the fortune cookies -- it's a bunch of 意淫 of ABC culture which is based on the wrong and shallow perceptions. the main actor himself isn't even a Chinese! not only it has not became the "atlantic" for Chinese, in so many ways, ..
its decently funny and enjoyable plus full support for an asian story and cast

I really enjoy the 90s referrences. Constance Wo (Jessica) absolutley makes the show.
