I did really wanted to like this but the first two episodes (expecially the first) were terrible handled... The beggining of this series is a complete mess and the only thing they do is introducing characters who relate to nothing, have sex scenes that basically mean little to nothing and cliffhangers that make no sense or are in the wrong place at the wrong time...
I only watched 4 episodes and for what I can tell, it seems that it gets much better ahead but I'm not losing more time with this... I still have a lot of thing to watch!
Not sure if that even makes sense, but "Game of Thrones" could be an excellent example of a down-to-earth sociopolitical fantasy. Magic and superstition have a tangible impact on the events - you could replace the dragons with nuclear weapons and it will still make sense. You can see blood, sweat, and all kinds of body fluids in a hostile world where there is (almost) no plot armor for anybody.
The show has impressive production value, fantastic world-building, and manages to be gripping throughout despite being made of 80% talking, 15% action, and 5% boobies in the air. It's also one of the rare cases where slow pacing becomes a necessity, as it takes time to remember all characters and their intricate relationships as the plot keeps turning, twisting, and betraying the audience's expectations.
The first season starts with two strong episodes, and even though it gets a bit too talky in the middle, the main storyline at King's Landing is gold. I guess they wanted to keep it simple as there's already a lot to remember for this season, but characters have been all introduced as either black or white, it's obvious whom they want you to like and hate. Hopefully we will get to see some grey as each storyline develops.
Starting my GOT journey in the last days of 2021.
Hooked from the first episode.
Great opening season but still overly brutal from time to time (as are the books). Because of its fast pace the TV series is not as nerve-grating as the books are: here one's empathy with the protagonists that suffer and die is short lived because the plot is moving forward very fast while when reading the books one suffers endlessly when George R. R. Martin decides to kill off (yet) another of the good guys he built up painstakingly or when he lets the evil ones live and flourish even though moral dictates that they have to suffer or die.
Since when is Daenerys called Dany?
I am really late to the party, but season 1 was a pretty sweet first impression. There are so many moving parts to this story, and a lot of thought was clearly put into this world, and how the circumstances of the characters influence their behavior. Consider me on board.
I was never a huge fan of the fantasy genre. I didn't even know those books existed. Until I bought my wife one for her birthday (which turned out to be Book three). At that time the show was already running so I decided not to watch and instead wait for the end of it so I can watch it all in once. I am not good at waiting for conclusions. I actually managed to not know anything about the story itself.
First season was good but it didn't throw me off my feet. It feels very much like medieval England where everyone wants to be King. Production value is through the roof, though. I understand this season is but the foundation for what is to come. But there has to be coming something good.
I still would rate it an 8 but that is seven for the story and +1 for the production. Because, like I said, it is good and it sets itself apart from others by the quality alone.
This is the only season I have or will watch of Game of Thrones. Interestingly enough this was when I got out of the hospital and while I was in the hospital I had finally picked up this book everyone was talking about called Game of Thrones. it was a middling book because it promised all this fantasy element and just I read the whole book waiting for something to happen and nothing ever did. That just left weird political intrigue and you never understand the first time through. You have to either keep reading until it makes sense in context or just reread it slowly until you get it. I didn't like it.
Then unknown to me the TV show popped up. I figured I'd give it a chance. Honestly the best thing I can say about the TV show is that it's a faithful adaption. It's a VERY VERY faithful and good adaption of the first book. Unfortunately I didn't like the first book. WHich leaves me in the position of watching everything I hated happen all over again. I finished the first season and if you love the book series you'll love this season. But for me I stopped the books at 1 and I'll be stopping the show at 1 (season) and that's it. I have zero interest in ever watching this show again.
Got to around episode 5 or 6 and had to give up on this long slow drudge of bullshit and boredom.
