  • 2011-03-05T14:00:00Z30m

One of the most exciting and time consuming parts of any project is the final assembly. This is where you bring it all together into a finished vehicle, and where attention to detail is so important. Today on GEARZ Stacey walks thru some of the things that need to be done on a project before you can actually call it “done”. Fuel system, electrical, driveshaft, these are all things that are easy to overlook and have a way of rearing their head to bite you at the end of a project.

There is a saying that for every good side of something , there's also a dark side. Today on GEARZ, Stacey goes there as he reveals what to do when bad things happen to good projects. Using Ted Nugent's old broken down and discarded Bronco as an example, he shows how to start over and re-kindle the passion in a project that has been given up on by everybody else. If your project has been stolen or stripped, or has become stranded by hard times, sometimes all it needs is a little change of direction to get it to rise out of the ashes and soar again.

  • 2018-03-31T13:00:00Z21m

Stacey takes us through the history of the legendary SR-71 Blackbird. If you’re not familiar with this bird, it could fly mach 3.2, cruise at 80,000 feet and kept our country safe through its many reconnaissance missions. Never shot down, and never outrun, it was the hot rod of the sky! Stacey gets to sit down with pilot Lt. Col. Ed Yeilding and talk about his record setting transcontinental flight—Coast to Coast in 67 minutes and 54 seconds! The iconic Blackbird was such an inspiration that you know Stacey had to make a vehicle inspired by and paying tribute to it, so get ready to meet the SR-71 Rapid Tool Express!

The Catalog Camaro is back in the garage and ready to go under the knife as Stacey shows how to do a butt lift and tummy tuck on a 2nd generation Camaro. What does that mean? Well, last season Stacey performed a nose job on this old ’81 Camaro to show how easy it is to get rid of the 80’s plastic front bumpers and put on the classic early 70’s split-bumper, rally sport front sheetmetal. This week he continues the makeover by losing the plastic rear bumper and wrap-around taillights and grafting in the early 70’s quarter panels, round taillights and chrome bumper. It’s more in depth than the front and definitely requires some skilled metal surgery, but Stacey shows you all the tricks on how to do it properly. So, sit back and enjoy the ride as Stacey details how to measure, cut, and weld your way to a much younger looking Camaro.

The Jeep may be the single most modified vehicle out there. From winches to lights, doors and fenders, if you’ve got a Jeep, it probably has some accessories on it. The test will include everything from ease of install to styling, overall sound decibels and of course, how watertight it is. Hopefully you won’t get wet on this ride! As the SR71 Rapid Tool Express nears completion there are a couple of major things left on the plate before we can fire her up and get her down the road. First, every aircraft must have fins, and Stacey finally finds the fins he’s been looking for since the beginning of this build. Second, a cool logo design shows up at the shop. Third, what’s a stealthy tribute vehicle without stealthy paint? Believe it or not, Stacey’s got some paint that should keep the SR71 flying under the radar. Also, a slightly modified March Performance system will help Stacey get that much closer to putting some spark to this awesome build and stick around for plenty of other tech advice from America’s Gearhead… on GearZ.

16x08 The New/Old Van Craze

  • 2022-07-12T13:00:00Z30m

There was a time when vans ruled the custom scene! They had slick paint jobs (sometimes with wizards), crazy interiors, and even crazier engines. Then, like the lightning from a wizard’s wand, they disappeared, and the world of vans returned to boring service vehicles. Well, like it or not -- Vans are back! That’s right! Vans are emerging as the new custom vehicles on the car show scene! But where do you find cool parts to turn that dumpy old phone service or laundry van into a sweet street machine? Hang on to your sliding doors, cause Stacey has a few tricks up his sleeve to take some common parts and use them to breathe some new life into the faded glory of van culture. The Great Van Redo starts now on Gearz!

The crazy yellow van is getting a facelift. Last time Stacey showed off a few different grille options that could work with these older vans. It’s good riddance to that clunky plastic face, and hello to some real steel. But with every modification, there are bound to be a couple of roadblocks. But this is a rocking van, and just like the A-Team, roadblocks are something vans were meant to break through. Hang on tight, 'cause Stacey’s gonna show you what it takes build your own brackets to relocate the headlights and keep them fully adjustable and serviceable with OEM parts. What’s more, taking care of these mods is just the beginning. The van craze is Back! And just like Mr. T. used to say, "we pity the fool that don’t watch this vantastic episode!"

Are you a diesel maniac? Do you love the smell of rolling coal in the morning? Does the whine of a diesel turbo make your heart race? Then we may have the event for you. Tag along as Stacey takes you through this year’s event, on Gearz!

Every gearhead out there knows that unboxing a crate engine is like Christmas morning no matter what time of year it is. Inside that box is a pre-built, run-in, and ready to install engine, and it means the heart and soul of your project has finally arrived! Well, we’re no different on GEARZ, and today, Stacey unboxes a 570hp GM Performance LS 427! But it’s not just the engine, it’s also the matching 6L80E transmission and the plug and play kit that will allow us to install this setup in virtually anything. But just like a Christmas morning toy that needs batteries to work, this crate engine is going to need a few extra things before Stacey can drop it into our classic yellow chevy van. We’re talking engine accessories, headers, and all the other things that you need to address when you’re thinking about doing a motor swap on your project. After that we dig into some paint tech as well as how to keep the heat down on your exhaust system. It’s all here, on Gearz.

With any project, there comes a time where you are ready to dig into it and start cutting, welding, and building. BUT STOP…wait a minute. Today on GEARZ, Stacey shows how to plan in a way that will save you time, frustration, and money. By laying out your parts and planning each step of the disassembly and reassembly you will find that the project will not only go together quicker, but you also plan for delays or obstacles that may come your way ahead of time. There is nothing worse than getting stalled in the middle of a project…today Stacey shows you how to keep that from happening on the Ol’ Yellow Van…

Question: who is the most influential automotive designer of all time? Did they work for Ford, Chevy, Ferrari, or Jaguar? Or were they more of a maverick and designed race cars like Lola, McLaren, or Chapparal? Well as amazing as all these people were, no car designer influenced the hot rod world like the legendary Tom Daniel. With vehicles like the “Red Baron”, “Beer Wagon”, “Paddy Wagon”, and “Tijuana Taxi”, he didn’t just capture the imaginations of millions of young gearheads, he and Monogram gave them the models to build their own version. But there is so much more to the story and the elusive man and his creative, artistic genius. Today, Stacey and the GEARZ crew journey to Utah to find out more about the legendary car designer Tom Daniel. After that, Stacey gets cutting and chopping on the Toolboxer projects, then we venture out on the road to visit a crazy fiddle player and his project with rust issues! Only on GEARZ!

17x01 The COPPERHEAD Story! Legendary Chevy C-10 Build

  • 2023-03-29T13:00:00Z30m

About 20 years ago, Stacey built a 67 C10 truck on TV called “COPPERHEAD”. From the humble beginnings of just a frame and cab to the rumbling monster it became, nobody dreamed that the truck would go on to become one of the most influential trucks of all time. The influence was so strong it helped start the custom truck craze that continues to this day. But what made it so iconic and different? Well, today on GEARZ Stacey answers those questions as he walks you through the build and showcases the unique features and parts that went into building it, and the thought process behind it. It’s a rare look at the story behind the build, and It’s only on GEARZ!

If you have a classic car or truck, there’s no doubt you want to drive it and enjoy it. But how do you maintain it and not ruin its value? Good question! Using Copperhead as an example as he gets it ready for the Grand National Roaster Show, Stacey guides you through maintenance and upgrades that can be done to a classic vehicle to keep and increase the value, as well as what you should leave alone to ensure the value of the original build is maintained. From brake lines and bumpers to carbs and leaky gaskets, this will show you what you need to address on your classic, and what you need to leave alone.

17x06 Jeepster Going Commando

17x06 Jeepster Going Commando

  • 2023-06-28T13:00:00Z30m

There’s no doubt the Jeep is one of the most popular vehicles out there to modify and customize. Wagoneers, CJs, YJs, TJs, and JKs are just a few of the popular models that everybody knows and loves to modify. But what if you buy a project with a specific plan in mind, only to find all is not what it seems? Do you sell it? Restore it? Modify it? Well, this time on GEARZ, Stacey answers those questions as he rolls in a rare 1967 Jeepster convertible and shows you how to successfully change the direction of a project when it throws you a major curveball. Follow along as Stacey strips down this Jeepster and goes Commando, then starts a level 1 restoration instead of the level 3 he had originally planned. After that, we take a minute to check out the Keep On Truckin’ event at this year’s Grand National Roadster Show. So many trucks, so little time!

This time on GEARZ, the ’67 Jeepster is back on the block as Stacey goes underneath and deals with the saggy suspension, faded brakes, and oh so many leaks! It’s all part of a continuing level 1 restoration, and well within the scope of what most people can do in their own garage if they take their time and plan it out. The purpose? To show that once all the dust settles and the parts are replaced, a level 1 restoration will give you a reliable driver that you can enjoy now, and not spend two years building. If you’re just getting into working on cars, this is the kind of project you need…and you’re only gonna see it on GEARZ!

If you pull into any cruise-in or car show, you’re bound to see a lot of cool stuff like Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Slammed Trucks, and Resto-Mods. But none of those would exist if it hadn’t been for those early Hot Rods and the aftermarket parts that made it possible to light up the night with roaring engines and burning rubber. So, to pay tribute to that hot rod spirit Stacey is rolling in a 1940 Chevy coupe and putting together a hot small block to go in it. Multiple carbs, finned aluminum and plenty of horsepower are just some of the magic ingredients that make this rod roar. But it’s not just Hod Rods on this show. Ride along as Stacey takes a legendary Aston Martin DB5 out for a 007 test drive. It’s all here, on Gearz.

The Little Red Wagon is back on the chopping block as Stacey continues upgrading the old nasty interior of this well-worn ‘99 Dodge truck. From new carpet to headliner, to repainting door panels and even changing the interior color, you’re gonna find that this is something anybody can do on a reasonable budget. So, if you’re tired of your original seats, carpet, or just want to change the way your interior looks, this is the show to see because ch-ch-ch-changes on the Little Red Wagon are really bringing this old shop truck back to life! After that we’ll also take a look at one of the most innovative products you’ve ever seen to keep those furry critters out of your cars and the garage. It’s all on Gearz.

When it comes to laying out a vehicle for a hot rod build, most people focus on the engine and transmission they want but tend to overlook the chassis and frame. That can be a mistake because throwing 500hp into an 80-year-old frame can cause some serious problems unless you upgrade it properly. In the past, Stacey has shown how to upgrade a vintage frame, but today he digs into what’s involved in a full frame replacement to make sure our ’40 Chevy can handle everything we want going to throw at it. From frame to upgraded suspension and brakes, to a classic quick change rear end, this build is going to show you another option to upgrading your hot rod foundation, while checking all the vintage boxes! And speaking of hot rods, no hot rod is complete without a kicking’ stereo, so follow along as we showcase KICKER Audio, as they celebrate 50 years in car audio innovations…… only on GEARZ!

Everybody knows that if you have tools, you need to have a place to keep them. But not all toolboxes are created equal, and we prove that by taking an in-depth look at the new ARCA series boxes from Cornwell. Then we take a look at the record-breaking, Pro-stock ‘63 ‘Vette that’s running a hot Cummins diesel for power. Finally, we dig into barn finds and look at how to assess floor pans and how to pick the right engine accessories to fit the style and space of our latest Hot Rod ’40 Chevy project. It’s a lot of stuff that you don’t want to miss!
