Ramstein exists twice. The largest US air force base outside the US - and the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Ramstein, which gave the neighboring Air Base the name. Here, where one depends on American orders and consumers, no one knows exactly what the military is doing. Ramstein also stands for a catastrophe that has become deeply engrained in German memory. Thirty years ago, on August 28, 1988, an air show in Ramstein killed 70 people and injured more than 1,000.
