Apparently shot over five days for $423, six-part web series High Road follows the on and off air travails of Terry, a down-on-his-luck rocker turned Piha radio DJ. Justin Harwood wrote and directed the series, and created the role of caravan broadcaster Terry for actor Mark Mitchinson, double New Zealand Film & TV Award-winner for his work in Bloodlines and Siege. Harwood played in indie bands The Chills, Luna and Tuatara in the 80s and 90s, and alt music fans are given much to savour via the soundtrack; camerawork is by ex-Headless Chicken Chris Matthews.

1x01 They Shoot Horses, Don't They

The needle drops on Bowie's Suffragette City in the first episode of this six-part web series created by ex The Chills bassist Justin Harwood and written especially for Mark Mitchinson. From a campground in Piha, Terry Huffer plays alt rock classics on his radio show WLUV, but his blatant stalking of hot equestrienne Shona ("ride that horse for me") isn't doing him any favours in the community. The soundtrack for each ep is a kind of mini Harwood mixtape, this week featuring Van Morrison, Sonic Youth, David Bowie and The Osmands.

In this second ep of Justin Harwood’s web series cum treasure trove for alt rock nerds, money troubles plague Terry Huffer as he broadcasts Radio WLUV from the (actual) Piha Camp Ground. Even as Terry reminisces about the time The Huff met The Boss, he begs for pledges — but the only one calling is the tax department. At the beach he encounters Shona's husband Kevin McLaren (Andre King) and is surprised by his tolerant attitude. Then — redemption arrives in the post. Soundtrack by Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen and The La De Das.

1x03 Don't Look Now

  • no air date10m

In an effort to boost his profile on social media, Terry installs a webcam at Radio WLUV, but is swiftly distracted by a visit from his old drummer Warren (Rob Dollars) who tries to convince him to go on tour. By the time sweet-natured Brian from the council (Peter Muller) drops by, the pair are several sheets to the wind, then Brian too is sucked into the debauchery. Ep three of this six-part web series features a cameo by Fiona, the real owner of the campground, and music by The New York Dolls, Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones.

1x04 Never Enough

  • no air date10m

As Terry Huffer pontificates on punk rock via his campground radio station WLUV, little does he know that the object of his fantasies, Shona (Danielle Mason), is listening in at home, baking scones and considering dropping by the station for a visit. Unfortunately, so too is Terry's ex-wife Belinda (Luanne Gordon) ... and she's not happy. Ex-The Chills bassist Justin Harwood's six-part series follows an ageing rocker whose romantic escapades may or may not be based on his own experiences as an alt rock god of the 80s and 90s.

Terry Huffer (Mark Mitchinson, for whom this six-part web series was written by Justin Harwood) is sinking a pint at the Piha Bowling Club, where he spies sexy Shona (Danielle Mason). Shona's husband hails Terry over to solve a dispute about Paul McCartney, then leaves on a job. Alone at last, Shona simply can not resist Terry's charms ("You might be a rude, creepy stalker but you're not a bad dude"). Camerawork by Chris Matthews and music by The Bee Gees, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Al Green and Neil Diamond.

The final episode of Justin Harwood's six-part web series finds ageing alt rocker Terry Huffer (Mark Mitchinson) in his car, stalking Shona (Danielle Mason) as she rides her horse. His impulsive decision to serenade his true love on the ukulele to Oasis' 'Wonderwall' does not go down too well with Shona — or her husband. But it's goodbye to the old and hello to the new as Terry spies the lovely Joan (Rachael Cooper) at a beach cafe, and though she has no idea who Joan Jett is, she makes a damn fine milkshake.
