This was just brilliant. At first i taught it would be just offensive(no problem with that), but this was actually a great social commentary.
showing people how you should address racism without using blackface. great work
freaking brilliant! One of the best season pilots i've ever seen. Smart, witty and funny!
[6.2/10] This one bit off a little too much than it could chew. The Gang doing a musical could be a great episode (in fact, it was!). The Gang learning what it’s like to be black could be a great episode. The Gang finding themselves in a body switch/quantum leap-type situation could be a great episode. But throwing all three together just results in an ungainly, if ambitious episode that never really finds its footing.
A number of the songs in this one are pretty repetitive and same-y, which takes away the fun of doing a musical episode. The same goes for the jokes about the gang trying to figure out what it is to be black -- which land on predictable bits like Frank wanting to use the N-word and The Gang straining not to make assumptions and Charlie assuming his upbringing means he’s like the black person whose body he’s inhabiting. The body switch stuff isn’t much better, though gets a little better banter to go with it.
But the episode at least nails the ending. For one thing, despite the episode being a bit wishy washy in its take on the difference between being black and being white in America, Charlie getting shot when he takes out a toy train is cutting as all hell. The corresponding song where The Gang all wants to go home is one of the episode’s best. And the twist that Old Man sees himself as Scott Bakula in the mirror is great.
That’s the thing about IASIP, even when an episode isn’t going so great, it often will pull out an ending that ties everything together so nicely you kind of forget.
Overall, an overstuffed episode whose eyes are bigger than its stomach with a nevertheless well-done ending.
It's not easy for a show to be on it's 12th season and still be this amazing.
I just hate musical episodes so much :(
Wow what the fuck. Absolutely terrible. Love the show. But waiting for this was wow. Fucked.
This was a brilliant start to the season! The show just keeps getting better and better - in writing, performance, cinematography, everything. Not only were the jokes on point, but the social commentary was great. I love when shows do musical episodes, so this made me extremely happy. The Quantum Leap references and Scott Bacula cameo added a whole other level of enjoyment. For such a weird premise, the episode was put together in such a neat, though-provoking, hilarious package. The ending was absolutely perfect and tied everything together.
This is my new favourite episode of Always Sunny.
season starts of strong, after 12 years originality is still through the roof
Such a weak start to a season. Would be fine as a 'filler' episode somewhere in midseason, but as a opening it's just meh.
I actually liked this - a lot of shows with an all-white cast fuck up episodes like this and it just feels awkward but this was good.
Worst episode I’ve watched this far. The whole I was waiting for it to finish
One of the all time great episodes. Amazing.
Well, well, well. I’ve been watching one (or more) episodes of this show since lockdown started, late March and that has got to be the funniest and cleverest episode so far. Really good!!!
a very special episode about hackneyed 1980s tropes;
seriously some of the best television i've ever seen

Now that's how you do social commentary! Is it just me or does this show get better every season?
