[7.3/10] This one started off slow, but won me over. In the early portion of the episode, there was just a lot of the continuing grossness and easy raunch carried over from Charlie’s half of the proceedings, without much humor to show for it. But I like how the episode ended up, with Frank of all people, giving the inspiring halftime speech to signify that, however much Mac may try to hide, the sort of motley crew that The Gang transport to the Super Bowl are Philadelphia, and something like an NFL Championship after decades of futility can bring them some (unpleasantly illustrated) relief and joy. The execution is shaky, but the idea is a strong one that holds together some of the episode’s weaker bits.
I’m also a sucker for rube goldberg and/or clockwork bits, and Dee getting pinkeye, blindly stumbling her way into the linen area of the arena, and inadvertently dousing Tom Brady with pinkeye at a crucial moment to help the Eagles win is a very amusing bit. I also enjoy this duology as a comedic riff on how fans think their superstitions affect the game, even if it comes off a little lumpy when things turn back over to Charlie.
Overall, this wasn’t my favorite two-parter in IASIP history, and lord knows I don’t relish a Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl victory (frankly just writing those words kind of made me wince), but I do appreciate the sentiment behind these episodes, and the kind of ugly but no less rousing insanity and catharsis sports can bring to a city.
wow can you believe the eagles won because charlie kelly got his leg caught in a bear trap? amazing
Dee in a pink eye Mr. Magoo bit was so absurdly perfect.
This whole season hasn't really felt like classic IASIP to me. This and the previous episode kind of solidified that for me. The past 2 episodes have been really boring and only a few episodes have been really good. Very disappointing for one of my favourite shows of all time.
Well, I'm an eagles fan now.
