[6.5/10] Not my favorite. I like the twist that despite Mac’s dad seeming like the scariest dude, he actually was making amends and wanted to take Mac and Charlie to Cooperstown. And Mac’s Dad’s delivery of his threat, and Mac’s reaction to it, is pretty damn funny. But the bulk of the episode didn’t do much for me.
I can appreciate the weirdness of Charlie being in an emotional love triangle with his mom and Frank, but it didn’t really go anywhere comedically. The same goes for Mac trying to recreate a happy childhood with his seemingly disinterested mom and dad. The dinner party goes to some decently jarring places, but it never quite clicks, and Frank’s treatment of Charlie’s mom just never crosses over into funny for me.
The other story in the episode, with Dennis looking like a local sex offender, went a little too broad for my tastes. I accept that the show has a very flexible reality, but Dennis buying that he should put on a fake mustache, take off his shirt, and flex for kids at the playground just feels too unbelievable even for this show. The fact that everyone thinks he looks like the sex offender (Glenn Howerton in a fat suit) is a decent enough gag, and the quid pro quo of Dee “helping” Dennis so that he’ll convince Mac not to let Mac’s dad work at the bar is a fine story engine, but on the whole it’s just not all that funny or tightly-written.
Overall, definitely a weaker one, but it has its laughs here and there.
