[6.7/10] Eh, this one was okay. I’m just not that big a fan of the McPoyles, and it feels like the show has gone to that well a lot in just three short seasons. There’s plenty to like here, from the gang instantly betraying and turning on one another, to the obvious Die Hard spoof. But a lot of it was gross and kind of lumpy in terms of the pacing and plotting.
Dee getting Stockholm Syndrome didn’t quite land for me (though the guys thinking it’s an actual illness did). Something about it just felt too broad or out of tone. The same goes with Dennis seducing Margaret McPoyle. I’m not opposed to gross humor, but there wasn’t much of a joke to it beyond “hey this is gross” which didn’t really work.
Again, there was some comedy to wring from the gang so quickly forming and breaking alliances and throwing one another to the wolves. They’re trying to give Dee to the robbers and claim that one another needs to die or take the first shift on digging was amusing in the usual “these people are so awful” sort of way. And Frank crawling around in the vents had some good physical comedy. Plus the whole roof confrontation was a high point for the Die Hard parody.
But something was just off in this one. It’s hard to put my finger on, but at its best IASIP has a sort of clockwork insanity where things are moving in all sorts of crazy directions but also kind of in sync. This one felt like much more of a mishmash without the comedy landing to distract from it. Some good stuff, but not one of the show’s best.
