[7.6/10] A very nice way to kick off Season 6. I don’t know if this is just intended to be a two-parter or if IASIP is going to go a little more serialized, but either way, I’m intrigued.
I love the main story, about Mac freaking out after Carmen marries the guy from all those High Life commercials. Despite the use of some slurs, it’s a great example of the joke being on The Gang rather than the people their antagonizing. Mac trying to use biblical references to condemn someone he’s just jealous over, and then not only getting schooled in his logical flaws, but being exposed for his own fear of being gay is a great reversal. The Mac is exasperated and just a hint self-aware, while everyone else is pretty oblivious and or dismissive of his nonsense is great.
I also love Charlie and Frank trying to get a domestic partnership so that Charlie can get on Frank’s healthcare and Frank can have Charlie prevent his kids from pulling the plug. Their whole back-cracking cycle is an outstanding bit of physical comedy. And the way they both show subtle empathy for gay people trying to get married when it affects them (mostly in terms of the paper work) and the way the episode wrings the comedy out of their ignorance and myopia (Frank not wanting to be “the girl” but then being cool with the idea of “two straight, married dudes”) is a hoot and the right kind of comedy with commentary the show doesn’t always go far.
I was less enamored with the “Dennis and Dee reconnect with their old flames from high school” storylines, but it had its moments. Dee’s gag reflex over her old flame is a good bit of physical comedy as well. And Dennis rushing into marriage because he thinks it’s where he should be in his life, only to quickly have reality him, is promising. (Plus his conversation with Mac about not having feelings is an awesome little insight into the character and his sociopathy.)
All-in-all, a lot going on in this one, and almost all of it quite funny with some of it even a bit incisive.
