Three episodes in and I'm already seriously annoyed by the characters' irrational choices and unrealistic behavior. Keeping secrets or lying for no good reason, promising one thing and doing another, etc. And they keep doing it over and over. And I'm not even mentioning their almost casual reaction to discovering a magic mirror that serves as a gateway to another realm. After such an experience any real person would start to seriously question their f****ng sanity or at least have a panic fit and leave that house to never come back again. I know I would. But no, these kids are like: "Wow, magic door. I guess that's nothing to be seriously alarmed about." Even after losing their father in a horrific and traumatic event it doesn't seem to bother these kids at all that they just almost lost their mother too inside this magic mirror maze. And these are just a few examples on the top my head. There's much more where that came from.
It's like watching an '80 horror movie where someone in an already dire situation hears a scary noise and decides to go towards it instead of running to safety. And sure, that was okay then. Maybe fun even. But today, these 30-40 old "proven devices" have become just that: old. Really old, both literally and figuratively. But apparently 30-40 years was not enough time for these writers to come up with something different or original.
It's a shame really, because I think the story overall is quite interesting. But it is starting to become almost unbearable to watch when the only reason the characters behave the way they do is because it's the easiest way to move the plot into a certain direction. It's lazy writing like this that makes characters unbelievable and unrelateble.
Everyone keeps making stupid mistakes. Mistakes that make no sense to even be made. Aside from that it's alright. Hopefully the second season will be written better. I would give it a 7/10, but honestly those mistakes feel like lazy writing so I'm gonna be lazy too.
definitely great concept, horrendous execution
All I could muster is nearly 6 episodes couldn't finish the sixth one because of how horrible the show is. Okay so going into spoilers
The dumbass daughter was so selfish she nearly killed her friends over a fucking door. Now yeah it's probably more important than the movie because of magic. But you went there to help them with a movie. The way she acted was the final straw in the coffin for me.
And the villain is straight up Once Upon A Time or CW level shit tier. If you were to get a clip of her and one of the Locke kids interactions. It could literally be something from Once Upon A Time and I would believe it. She is such a generic and cliche villain and might I add the actress is a terrible actor too. The scene where she meets the kid in the graveyard is the scene that sold it for me on bad acting. Maybe it gets better who knows, but I could not watch anymore of this dumb show.
Too bad there’s so much stupidity and useless teen drama as the premise of the story seems interesting. It’s like they had material for 4 episodes but had to push 10 and blurted out 6 hours of annoying filler content. The only character that is decent seems to be Bode. Tyler and Kinsey as written really bad and super annoying and they are stupid as a rock.
This show is the pinnacle of stupidity and you will see this with each passing episode.
I loved the comics, this adaptation is a real let down, I've waited years for this to happen, so it feels extra painful that this is the best they could do...
After watching the first season I no longer have interest in what's coming next.
Season one, despite the subpar acting and oftentimes horrendous writing, is worth a watch for the unique premise and interesting ideas presented. Just beware that you might find yourself shouting at your TV screen as you watch a character make a really dumb decision for the fifth time in one episode. 6/10 for uniqueness and being an entertaining watch despite its issues.
Season two is not worth watching at all. 3.5/10 - the keys become nothing more than a gimmick and never reach the same level of intrigue as the first season. It also feels like barely anything happens by the end of the season. The writing is even worse than the first season, and characters make even more dumb decisions.
I regret tuning in for season 3. Somehow it was even worse than season 2. Totally doubled down yet again on all the bad decisions made by the writers for the previous seasons. Add to that the addition of an awful new dull villain and you have the worst season of TV I've seen all year. 2.5/10.
Overall - 4/10. Season one is worth tuning in for, just to see some of the interesting ideas on display. But don't do yourself the disservice of continuing after that point - it really does go downhill big time.
Let me quote a Google audience review:
"I'm only about half way through the fifth episode but I'm so frustrated. I read through some of the other comments and I'm glad I'm not the only one pulling their hair out over the stupid decisions some of the characters make, especially Kinsey. Don't get me wrong it's an incredibly interesting concept and the some of the effects are super cool but certain aspects have me banging my head against the wall. There's a bunch of discoveries that are forgotten like the ghost key or characters that seem important but disappear for multiple episodes such as Ellie or the great great grandfather. Ellie made some kind of huge discovery where she yelled for Lucas into the well but then she's just gone. And the dad's just dead so they have a sad backstory and unanswered questions.
The mother is scarily detached from her kids' life and lets her youngest son who seems to be in grade school stay alone in a mansion by himself, even though he shows repeated concerning behavior talking about a lady in the well and whispering. I know her character is supposed to be a grieving mother who was never good at parenting but they just made her useless and pitiful. I'm seriously curious as to why we follow her story even though she seems kind of unimportant and neglectful.
And don't even get me started on Kinsey. She was already very rude from the beginning but she was traumatized and grieving so it wasn't that weird. But then she literally kills her ability to feel fear??? Like she's in high school she should know it's a vital feeling in order to survive!! After that her character just becomes painful to watch, she straight tells her mother that she's bad at parenting and she should just stick to painting and house renovations because "that's what you're good at" and she sees absolutely nothing wrong with that until she finds out her mom was in her life more that she thought she was. It's purely downhill from there, she then shows the guy she likes the keys which is a stupid thing to do you, don't just start showing people magic! He's freaked at first but then afterwards is totally chill about it?? She then abuses the music box key to absolutely humiliate this one girl, who, sure was mean, but she took it way to far! And then Gabe joined in on it and he was totally fine with the fact that she was using magic??? All the girl did was say that Scot was mediocre, and they made her humiliate herself in front of the school. Kinsey isn't cute or quirky and is far from the yeah new confidence you go girl! She became an awful character to watch and main characters with bad personalities makes it hard to cheer them on. I'm sure it was to show the addicting power to abuse the keys but still!
There are moments when the acting is a little lack luster, like most of it is totally fine but then it's just these odd few second scenes where the actors are just weird and 100% unnatural. Also the Well lady straight up killed two people for like literally no reason?? And we're just fine with that? If she's into killing why doesn't she use her power to threaten Bode into giving her the keys? And Kinsey and Tyler keep going back and forth from super close and buddy buddy to I hate you and at each others throats.
Hopefully the show gets better!"

Unfortunately, as Marissa likely discovers, it does not get better.
If you have never read the comics this show is decently entertaining with a very interesting world and magic system. But it has some of the dumbest character decisions and writing you have ever seen on TV. And the acting for the most part is just average (and the Mom IMO was even pretty bad).
If however you have read the comics and like me are a fan of them this show is a complete trainwreck. It just feels like a extremly dumbed down (was that last scene really necessary?), PG-13 CW-like show with insanely stupid characters (seriously what the fuck were some of those decisions?). I mean this is supposed to be a horror show but nothing in it says that. Not creepy atmosphere, nothing.
If you're expecting a good horror show based on the comics you are going to be immensely disappointed because this is just a basic teen drama and not even a good one at that.
So this is like Stranger Things, except all the main characters are children, they are fighting a powerful alien entity and the adults are ignoring everything that happens most of the ti... Wait...
2 seasons were great. But I left the series in the second episode of the third season. that weird marriage scene killed the show anyway. Netflix has once again revealed its homosexual project disgust to the audience, which it always does! There are no more locke & key among my favorite shows..
I still don't understand why Netflix only makes decaffeinated, childish versions of good stories. The last season is just absurd #suspensionofdisbelief. A disappointment, at least we have the comics.
Sometimes the writers make this family very stupid.
The first two seasons were great... The third and last season completely ruined the show. So disappointed with the writers.
Pretty good, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, but this is more of a 7 or 8 while the comic is a 10. The whole time I felt like they took the original story and sanded off all the edges because they were afraid that people couldn't handle some of the darker or more thought-provoking moments.
I really liked the idea for the story and mysteriousness they built. It kept me wanting to know what was going to happen. The storyline had some flaws, but it was still very good.
Way to go Netflix, this is yet another series with great promise that has turned to junk. I honestly can't think of a good Netflix series over the past couple years. Every single one has half the episodes written so poorly they are nearly unwatchable.
why has this been placed as ended when it's been renewed for 3rd season before the 2nd has come out??
The show has storytelling potential however, it lacks in making the characters likeable and engaging with audiences. I believe the writers wanted to show the reckless nature of adolescence but it left little reasons for audiences such as myself to root for the siblings. Out of the siblings I found Bode to be the most interesting and engaging character due to his curious personality. I did appreciate the plot twist although it was slightly predictable.
There was an announcement on one of the actors Instagram's of a new season release. I hope the writers have considered the Season one feedbacks to refine the character's attitude and actions.
I really enjoyed season 1.
Very interesting premise, cinematography and camera work was awesome.
One hell of a superb fantasy adventure ride where i finished the whole season in a single sitting (last something like this happened was with Stranger Things). Enjoyed Narnia? You will love this! Wished for a not so kids friendly Disney show? This is for you!
Show was funny, interesting, dark and mysterious. Even the VFX was awesome!
The ending was well made, with some twists abit predictable but still a very good ending towards the end. Now I can't wait for Season 2.
Show deserved a 10/10, but some parts were abit draggy and unnecessary. Overall the show was for me a 9/10
Some very good writing and one liners. Enjoying it so far
Quite enjoyable.
Writing is decent for the most part (some unrealistic plot-devices like police immediately closing a door upon arrival on the crime scene without taking pictures or anything), actors are convincing.
Story is actually quite interesting.
The only thing which really doesn't make sense is that the Demon can take the keys from anyone but the Lockes. What makes them special? Did I miss the explanation for that one?
Just for kids, the decisions and silly mistakes are just too childish. but it's worth the bing, if u want something to pass time with.
It’s not a bad show if you can get past the stupidity & lazy writing. The show takes a nose dive in to the field of stupidity start of episode 7. And last episode is filled with useless dialog that wastes 40 mins for no reason.
Netflix loves making shows where kids are main characters & make them really stupid like this show, Lost in Space, Unfortunate Events...standard Netflix formula.
The show definitely starts out great. After awhile some teen drama, love triangles and plot holes. Hold it back from greatness.
Despite that, I enjoyed the ride and hope for a season 2.
Good fun overall for what seems to aim for teens over YAs. Season 3 is a step-down in what seems to be them having to pump the brakes in the middle of some planned storylines to try and finish it the best they could.
I enjoyed season 1 quite a bit. I even gave it an 8/10 back then for its interesting premise and was hooked on all the new keys and the bad guy. Man how far this tumbled down hill. Season 2 and 3 went from bad to worse. Stupid decisions, bad acting, and lame dragged out scenes/villain portrayals killed this. I’m excited to read the unbutcherd comics.
I've watched 2 seasons and will reluctantly endure the third. Wishing you the best of luck when you've reached this crux.
This is an okay show but I feel that the acting is not where it should have been, all performances were pretty subpar. The storyline was ok for season 1 but then became a bit lackluster in the latter two seasons when the high school crap took over from the fantasy side of the show. Like I say, not a bad show by any means but not a great one either.
The comic is great and when the show deviates from it, It really confuses the story. The characters motivations still follow the original story but with missing elements and mixed up scenes it makes everyone look stupid and flat. Season 1 and 2 aren’t too bad, but season 3 just goes completely off the rails.
Adding in a new villain after kinda getting rid of dodge really ruins 3rd season. And limiting the keys in the show to be all the keys and destroying them all is stupid and cliche.
The show literally kills the magic of Key House.
You have seen this show before. Even if you haven't watched an episode, if you have stumbled on this review, you have seen this show. It is a run of the mill horror/drama/teenage/fantasy show. Plot is pretty uneven, but its okay. It is never outwardly bad, but it does little to stand above the competition. Unless this is your wheelhouse, it is just worth skipping.
Average Season Review: 7.17/10
Recommendation: Skip (For Teenage "Horror/Fantasy" Fans)
The first two seasons were absolutely great! The third season also started out strong but then from around the middle gradually declined to the terrible desaster of a "finale" which is the last episode of S3.
S1 & 2 were wonderfully paced, good character building, complex and believable solutions to complex and believable problems. S3 was rushed tf out the door. Good ideas with very much potential, but awfully paced and rushed. The story of S3 should've been at least 2 seasons on its own, rather 3 or more.
And that awful and boring happy-go-lucky ending with nonsensical "solutions" for all running plotlines did this series no favors whatsoever. It actually pushed my rating for this whole series from a 9/10 to a 7/10.
This is a shame since I'm usually not a fan of fantasy, but this series did so incredibly much right that I was drawn in from episode 1. And then they absolutely ruined it. I hate wasted potential and S3 is the definition of that.
I guess Netflix didn't want to pay the creators anymore and told them when they already had 3 to 5 episodes done, there's no other explanation for the third season. I'm incredibly disappointed.
Not with the creators of this show though, because as I said I think Netflix sent this series to crash and burn. And because of this I'm actually thinking about ending my Netflix subscription. Because this is unforgivable.
Excellent Magic system. But shallow characters and plot ruined it for me. I mean we are in it to watch the magic unfold and not to see some teenage angst. A spinoff would be preferred where they explored more on the keys.
Considering we finished this in like a week with my bf, I'd say we enjoyed the hell out of this, although we need to add that we finished the first two seasons in like three days and it took us four days to finish the third. We enjoyed the hell out of season 1 and 2 but as we feared, season 3 was quite a letdown. We normally hate teenagers in tv (shrugs) and were pleasantly surprised about these because, although there are quite a few mistakes, there weren't overall so annoying that we wanted to turn off the tv. Alas, season 3 definitely loses that.
However, it's certainly a cute show and if you enjoy magical elements and just generally like fantasy shows, this is definitely worth a watch. It'll go quick and it is overal quick paced (again, minus season 3 in that regard).
First 2 seasons of the show are quite good, but in 3rd season IQ of main characters seem to drop somewhat and they make absolutely silly, infuriatingly so, decisions
I like the way magic represented in this show.
This show has flaws, more than one.
But still it make me feel rare emotions (till goosebumps), and if show makes you feel something like that it worth watching.
The acting is bad, the characters are stupid, the script is very poor, it's like a cartoon. I want to slap Bode's face so hard, this kid is so stupid and if he had died in the first season, none of the bad things would have happened. I can't believe this show is so well-regarded, it's really terrible. I wanted to watch the last season but it's just dumb!
Not bad not bad at all
It’s a decent time pass. Season 1 was great but towards the end it starts to take a nose dive. Season 2 was bearable. And season 3 was just full of stupidity (even worst than previous season).
Also Netflix loves making shows with at least one kid character that is completely retarded and annoying. In this show it’s Bode.
I liked the first season, but it went downhill for me. Maybe the fact that I'm 27 has something to do with it; I can see younger people maybe liking this a lot more. There are great moments here and there, a few laughs, a little emotion, and some excitement at the awesomeness of the keys, but overall, nothing to write home about. I loved the concept of the keys and I hope someone takes it and does something better in the future, but what they did for this series was underwhelming. It's not BAD, it's just MEH. The plot is mostly predictable and not super engaging, and most of the characters are just okay, so I didn't care about anyone in any major way. It's something to watch if you feel like there's nothing else and you'll have a decent time with it, but that's it.
The first season (series) of this show was interesting.
The second and third had lots of angry shouty characters and elements introduced too soon and used too quickly or were just never used.
It makes for bad story telling and doesn't suspend your belief. I wouldn't watch this show twice.

The first season was interesting, but after that they introduce elements to the show too quickly and then use them too soon, or they do nothing with these introduced elements. It doesn't really suspend your belief. I wouldn't watch this show twice.
Here's the thing, I get it the graphic novels are gnarly. I don't care. This is the TV show version and it is an utter disgrace, the writing is atrocious and the acting just sucks on every level. There is ZERO logic or consistency and everything is constructed in the most hair pulling way to fit the plot and advance the story carrot by carrot. It is an insult to any viewer with 2 brain cells left and the show runners haven't go the slightest clue of anything. Well, easy decision. Locke & Key got locked away, it no longer exists over here.
Started off as a good show, but ended with an awful final season. Just for how good Season 1 was, overall its a 7/10
Season 1 was kinda decent but 2 and 3 were dumb af.
Read the comics, its not perfect but still better than this.
Good show, very different than the usual stuff
I love this show but.. Wtf was this last episode??
Bring back the keys and throw away the writers of the show!
It's well written, fun and beautiful.
This has an interesting and unique premise. The location shots are magnificent and are of some of the most beautiful places on the planet (and within driving distance of my home). The acting of the principal performers is excellent. But, the writing and the auxiliary acting too often slip off their axels. At the end of season one, I was handing out 9s (superb) but the season premiere for season two fell to a 4 (bad) with bad acting, poor writing and sloppy logic. For the balance of season 2 there were great moments contradicted by glaring inconsistencies and no faithfulness to a canon. I would just get caught up in the mysteries, drama and storytelling and then it would all come crashing down with really poor characters, performances or flaws in the narrative. It was disappointing. Without spoiling anything, the finale of season 1 & 2 were divided into two parts. They begin with good news (something worthy of a series finale) and then take a sharp turn (as if they just found out they had been renewed and needed a new premise). Unfortunately, season 2 seemed to be founded on the weakest characters and storylines. If there has not been a final season 3, I would have had to average out the superb with the bad and give this series a 7 (worth a watch but beware the pitfalls) out of 10. Fortunately, Season 3 was a steady climb to excellence of pilot and performance of which we had had glimpses of previously. I give the series an 8 (great) out of 10 [Fantasy Mystery]
SJW GARBAGE,TRASH,AGENDA,AVOID
1st season kinda interesting for a kid show, second season absolute SJW trash, barely about the keys anymore, just jamming the interracial agenda, typical garbage....stopped watching second episode...
Very childish series, I don't know who wrote it but many of the decisions seem made by boys, the story jumps from controversial situations to pure happiness on the part of the characters, as if 2 seconds ago nothing had happened ...
The special effects are very good, the story itself too, I would have given for a better series, but really see how there are situations that are not logical ... they are being attacked and after two seconds they leave the keys thrown around the house as if nothing had happened. .... I keep looking at it only because as I said the effects and the story in general is good, but I would not recommend it.
It looks like this is a 2011 pilot for a TV series for Fox that was not picked up?
I don't even know why I found myself looking at it, perhaps to take a break from New Amsterdam, and after seeing that crap Oxygene and the two decent Jupiter's Legacy and Shadow and Bone. The fact is that I devoured it in 3 days of binge watching.
Some characters are not bad, especially the naughty Lukas / Dodge, and the interpretation of Darby Stanchfield and Emilia Jones. In my opinion, the real protagonists of the show are precisely the keys, which literally come to life and acquire personality in the hands of each character.
In the last 10 minutes of the last episode, we understand that with the second season it will practically start all over again. And frankly, the idea doesn't intrigue me very much. So I'll stop here.
Really enjoyed this series. Binge watched over 2 nights and wasn't disappointed. Last episode answers a few questions and set's up very nicely for the next season, can't wait. :thumbsup_tone1::grin:
This is the best , I love this series
It was a fun kids fantasy. It was fun seeing how the keys worked especially when they crawled through eachother's minds. The magic is definitely the star of the show. The main kids were believable, a difficult task. the villain was kinda stock big bad evil guy. the plot twists were a bit predictable. I laughed hard as the youngest used a friggin bear trap with absolutely no effect. I am a bit story savy so it wasnt fantastic for me, but if you want an entertaining family horror fantasy in between stranger things seasons then this is your show.
Really enjoyed this and easily bingeable! Great concept and story, fast paced fantasy thriller. Hooked on for wanting more.
I really enjoyed the story line but the acting was terrible
Warning! This is just another Netflix teenage drama! They should state that clearly in advance...
Really good show with unique and fun concept.
Good adaptation of the comic books but could be a little darker / more gruesome at times. As a reader of the books the show had changed enough that there’s a few things to surprise.
There is the occasional dip in pacing and cheesy dialogue, but quick to pick up.
There were two parts I didn’t feel were explained or just conveniently brushed over:
When Sam is stabbed by dodge, she takes the keys (which were supposed to have the skull key) then the skull key is still there for Sam to go through the door and
Emily and rufus take the shadow crown key for their trip to pick up the crown. Why not just leave it safe with the Lockes who can’t have it taken from them?!!
Although i wished for a little more darkness or grit this Family fantasy from Netflix was binge worthy.
Finally an awesome tv show with a good taste of fantasy!!! :black_heart:

I Love it! Something new, always making me want more. Hope you all enjoy as I did.
