I'm currently watching season 6 of the original Magnum PI and was surprised to see this pop up. I immediately thought about how they could fuck up the themesong that I spent many tries attempting to record completely on my cassette-recorder but upon viewing this I must say they didn't fuck it up.
The rest however...
The thing that made Magnum PI so great was the fact, despite being a marine, that he was real human being... this Magnum, from the get-go is an action hero jumping from space and blazing his way through the Jungle, driving backward and shooting others... Why is it so important that these remakes need to lose the human aspect that made us cling so much to these characters. The original Magnum wasn't less of a hero for being afraid to get shot or hesitating to jump from one building to the other... On the contrary.
Couldn't care less that this Higgens is a woman but... where's connection between these two characters. Higgens and Magnum were at odds at the beginning of the original series but these almost seem to be at each others' throat. And let's not start about destroying the iconic Ferrari not once but twice (I know, it's popular, the A-team movie did it too, apparently it's their way of saying "fuck your past").
I'm not the kinda person to say this shouldn't exist but I do wonder why it needs to be so different from the original (same with MacGyver) that it barely resembles the source material. Maybe I don't like sucky reboots and rather have mediocre sequels, maybe I don't like bulletproof hero's but people with heart... and this comes from a person who still adores the 80s
Full disclosure: I haven't watched the complete episode (edit: I have now) and I started skipping scenes to see if it would stay like this (and as far as I could tell it did). I have three more seasons of original Magnum to go. I'll be with the lads, Higgy baby! (though I guess new TC won't be saying this to new Higgens any time soon)
I have found that it is important to examine each reboot on its own merits and not in comparison to its previous incarnation. With this in mind, I have that this incarnation of Magnum P.I., so far, is worthy of my time going forward.
When are they going to allow you to remove garbage like this from your watch list
it's one of the better remakes really. it's light, fun just entertainment. not like that crap charmed or even team macgyver. I like the cast of tc, rick and even higgy. they could have casted a better magnum tough, but it's ok.
OK, stupid CBS canceled this show along with a few other good ones — but it's MOVING to NBC - they picked it up for 2 more seasons, 10 episodes each!!!
I really wanted to like this, I stayed for more episodes because the supporting characters were fun especially Kumu, but Jay and Perdita are awful.
My score: poor (Dropped)
morons canned it . screw you CBS U jerks .
Ok. If you watch this expecting it to be like the original just don’t. On its own it lighter than the original and I think it stands on its own. My wife loved the original and we both are enjoying this reboot and look forward to the new episodes. I have to say I like this new Higgins better than the original. She’s a more approachable character and easier to relate to.
Went in with the common preconceived notion of "I grew up on the original".
However.. this remake.. EXCELLENT.
TV Back stories on remakes??... always an intriguing approach for me. Right off the bat, fill-in, back story, history. I love it!! Great reimaging of Magnum P.I.!
An absolute shame the show was cut at season 5.
It could've been a whole lot better. Straight off the bat, I'm going to assume that the original series is much better, or that I would think so when I get around to watching it. I guess that's a mutual thing with TV shows from back then. They had their respective charms, for their time, especially, and still do, and still hold up, even now. And by rebooting one of them, nobody can seem to make it, the newer, more modernized version, anything like whatever made people love the original. Is that because a more modernized take on something from back then doesn't fit, or is it because reboots, in general, have this bad reputation of being done horribly, and because of that, nobody dares to attempt giving it their all and having their focus be on making it like the original but with a kick of modernization? I mean, wouldn't it be something if a reboot is just that, in just the sense of its meaning, and people like the hell out of it? Or take it a step further than that. A reboot that is only such when it comes to its meaning but is compared closely with the original? That would be quite something. Is it possible, though? I think it can be, but nobody is stepping up to the plate for that. They just prefer rebooting a TV show, or something from the past and disregard certain aspects that shouldn't have been disregarded, and make unnecessary changes. What they don't seem to understand is that it isn't necessary. Of course, one might say that a reboot in itself isn't necessary. But I think differently. It is all about the execution, even with making changes and disregarding certain things and aspects. I think reboots have the potential to be just as good as what they're based on, I just don't think this one is that precious first one. Then again, as I said, I haven't watched the original Magnum P.I. series, yet. But there isn't a doubt in my mind that it is way better than this reboot. At best, it serves as the perfect show to be watching when other shows that you are currently watching are much more serious and tense, as a mentally therapeutic, lighthearted fix to relieve and bask yourself in.
Can't really say that I remember the original but love this show. Light hearted and fun and makes me feel a little nostalgic when the opening credits start. Love the magnum character and acting is great for the entire cast.
I actually thought this show had promise, yet it becomes more boring with every episode. No fault to the acting, just piss poor writing.
Soooo much better when it was Magnum P.I. not Higgins P.I. REALLY DONT BOTHER
Really enjoying this reboot, and the guy from The Mentalist looks to be a good addition to the cast.

I love the original Magnum PI show and this is obviously not nearly as good but it’s not bad. It’s decent comfort TV. I like the fact that they did not try to outdo Tom Selleck and chose a rather low key, not too studly lead actor. They screwed up on the love hate relationship between Magnum and Higgins though - in this new show the animosity feels forced and fake. Some of the acting is not great and they have annoying little jingles constantly in the background to accentuate what’s happening on screen… is there a name for that? I need to google it. It’s like the musical version of a laugh track… except not only for laughing - for everything. It gets pretty unbearable if you pay attention to it…
