Match of the Day (often abbreviated as MOTD) is the BBC's main football television programme. Typically, it is shown on BBC One on Saturday evenings during the English football season, showing highlights of the day's matches in the Barclays Premier League. It is one of the BBC's longest-running shows, having been on air since 1964, though it has not always been aired regularly. The 'Match of the Day' brand is also often used for live football coverage on the BBC. They run a competition called Goal of the Month, choosing the best goal each month, where the winner from there will then be entered into a goal of the season award.

  • 2014-08-23T21:30:00Z1h 20m

Gary Lineker introduces highlights of the day's six Premier League games, including Everton against Arsenal and Chelsea versus Leicester City.

Newly-promoted Leicester face a tough trip to Stamford Bridge in their first away fixture since returning to the top flight. Title contenders Chelsea have strengthened their squad this summer with the acquisition of Spain stars Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas plus Brazilian international Filipe Luis, all of whom could make their home debuts against the Foxes.

Everton and Arsenal spent much of last season duelling for the fourth and final Champions League spot, which the Gunners eventually secured. That success helped manager Arsene Wenger recruit Chilean World Cup star Alexis Sanchez for £35m this summer, whilst the arrivals of Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina and young English full-back Calum Chambers have also boosted Arsenal's options. Everton, meanwhile, smashed their club record to sign striker Romelu Lukaku, who had a successful loan spell at Goodison Park last season.

Elsewhere, Southampton host West Brom in what will be Ronald Koeman's first home game as Saints boss, while Aston Villa meet Newcastle, Crystal Palace take on West Ham and Swansea face Burnley

2014x05 MOTD - 30th August 2014

  • 2014-08-30T21:30:00Z1h 20m

Gary Lineker introduces highlights of the day's eight Premier League games, including Everton against Chelsea. All eyes are on the Toffees' £28m summer signing Romelu Lukaku, who was allowed to leave Chelsea after a successful season on loan at Goodison Park. The Blues themselves spent £32m on Brazilian-born Spain international Diego Costa, so it will be fascinating to see which of the two strikers comes out on top.

The day's first kick-off sees newly promoted Burnley host Manchester United, while Stoke boss Mark Hughes faces his former side when the Potters take on reigning champions Manchester City. Elsewhere, Aston Villa meet Hull, Newcastle host Crystal Palace, QPR take on Sunderland, Swansea face West Brom and West Ham play Southampton.

Gary Lineker introduces highlights from the Premier League, with fixtures including a crucial match as Arsenal host defending champions Manchester City. Last season, City famously beat the Gunners 6-3 at home before picking up a point at the Emirates Stadium to help them on their way to winning the title.

The early evening game sees Liverpool face Aston Villa, with the Reds hoping to end the Villans' three-match unbeaten run at Anfield. Elsewhere, Chelsea play Swansea, Crystal Palace meet Burnley, Southampton host Newcastle, Stoke face Leicester, Sunderland take on Tottenham and West Brom play Everton

Gary Lineker introduces highlights of the day's seven Premier League fixtures, including Liverpool's trip to West Ham. Last season the Reds beat a dogged Hammers side 2-1 in an incident-packed match at Upton Park during the title run-in. Two Steven Gerrard penalties ultimately proved the difference in a game that saw the woodwork struck on numerous occasions.

Arsenal are also on the road, they travel to Aston Villa and have not been beaten by the West Midlands club at Villa Park since 1998, winning eight of those 14 contests.

Elsewhere, Mark Hughes takes his Stoke side to former club QPR and Tottenham host West Bromwich Albion.

Gary Lineker introduces highlights of the day's eight Premier League fixtures, including two mouthwatering derby clashes.

Last season's title contenders Liverpool clash with Everton for the first Merseyside bragging rights of the season in the early kick-off. The Reds were three goals to the good within 35 minutes of last year's clash at Anfield and ended up 4-0 winners, with departed talisman Luis Suarez among the scorers.

The early-evening game is similarly stirring with Arsenal hosting their north London neighbours Tottenham Hotspur.

And it's not all about the derbies on Saturday. Sandwiched in between those local rivalries, champions Manchester City travel to Hull City while fellow title contenders Chelsea take on Aston Villa. In Saturday's other fixtures Manchester United face West Ham, Crystal Palace take on Leicester, Southampton meet QPR and Sunderland entertain Swansea.

There's a London derby at Selhurst Park, where Crystal Palace entertain Chelsea in a match which proved crucial to both team's fortunes last season. Relegation-threatened Palace won 1-0 after an own goal from John Terry, denting the title hopes of Jose Mourinho's side.

Elsewhere, Arsenal host Hull, Burnley are at home to West Ham, Aston Villa travel to Goodison Park to take on Everton, Newcastle face Leicester and Southampton play Sunderland at St Mary's Stadium.

City were utterly dominant against the Hammers last season, winning all four of their encounters. They easily won both league matches and also enjoyed a record breaking 9-0 aggregate victory in the League Cup semi-finals.

  • 2014-11-01T22:30:00Z1h 20m

It is 40 years since the last goalless draw between the sides, who have produced some thrilling encounters down the years. Last season's game at St James' Park was no exception - Liverpool twice hit back from a goal down to earn a 2-2 draw.

There's a west London derby at Stamford Bridge, where title hopefuls Chelsea take on promoted side Queens Park Rangers. The Hoops won their last game away to the Blues in January 2013, but that is their only top-flight victory there since 1979. Another promoted team, Burnley, also face a difficult test as they travel to Arsenal, while Everton host Swansea, Hull meet Southampton, Leicester play West Brom and Stoke take on West Ham.

2014x13 MOTD - 8th November 2014

  • 2014-11-08T22:30:00Z1h 20m

Gary Lineker presents highlights from all of today's Premier League fixtures. On paper the biggest fixture looked to be Chelsea's visit to Liverpool. The Blues' 2-0 victory at Anfield last season ended Liverpool's 11-match winning streak and spelled the beginning of the end for the Reds' title hopes. So far this season it has been the London side who have looked the more likely champions but there is still a long way to go, and today's result could prove crucial.

Other fixtures today included Manchester United hosting Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. The Red Devils did the double over Palace last season but both sides have changed managers since then.

Elsewhere, last season's champions Manchester City visited QPR, while Burnley and Hull met at Turf Moor. Southampton welcomed Leicester to St Mary's while there was a battle of the claret and blues when West Ham and Aston Villa met at Upton Park.

It is the first time Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has faced Arsene Wenger in the Premier League and he will be hoping to extend his side's unbeaten run at the Emirates, with United's last defeat away to Arsenal coming in May 2011.

Title hopefuls Chelsea host a West Brom side that took crucial points off them last season. The Baggies came agonisingly close to a victory at Stamford Bridge last November, only to be denied by a controversial Eden Hazard penalty in stoppage time as the game ended 2-2.

Elsewhere, champions Manchester City host Swansea, West Ham travel to Everton, Leicester take on Sunderland, Newcastle are at home to QPR and Burnley are away to Stoke.

Gary Lineker presents highlights of the day's eight Premier League games, including title-chasing Chelsea's trip to Sunderland. The Black Cats dented Chelsea's title hopes, while boosting their own chances of avoiding relegation, with a 2-1 victory in their last meeting in April.

Elsewhere, former Manchester United legend Steve Bruce takes his Hull side to his old club while Liverpool host Stoke. Brendan Rodgers's side began last season with a 1-0 win over the Potters at Anfield, and after a stuttering start to this campaign they are desperate for three points.

Elsewhere, West Brom take on Arsenal in the early kick-off and West Ham host Newcastle. The day's other fixtures see Aston Villa travel to Burnley, Swansea face Crystal Palace and QPR take on Leicester.
