Following the death of her mother, Tess Silverman travels to Drover's Run, the farm where she spent the first few years of her life. Drover's is a rural cattle property in South Australia, to reconnect with her only remaining family, her father Jack and her sister Claire, whom she has not seen in 20 years, since her mother left Jack and moved to the city, and taking Tess with her. Tess arrives in a complex situation and finds herself meeting an adoring father but a hostile sister whom she no longer knows and who resents her sudden arrival and even quicker ability to win over Jack, something she herself has never been able to accomplish. Tess is content with making her visit a short one and continue on to Venice to move on with her life but the sudden death of their father forces Tess and Claire to overcome their differences and the many obstacles before them to realize their father's dream of running Drover's Run together.

He assumes Alex and Claire are a married couple and manages to rile Claire even more.
The sudden death of local farmer Max Martin alarms Harry, prompting inner fears of his own mortality, and a sudden outward drive to defy whatever fate may have in store by pursuing instant and rapid expansion of his property. At first Meg isn't too worried as Alberto will be moving on. Before he can leave however, he saves Jodi yet again, this time from a snake, incurring a snakebite himself in the process. While he is recuperating, love starts to bloom between him and Jodi. Which is exactly what Claire is hoping would be happening between her mare (Blaze) and Harry's stallion (Wildfire).
Tess is obsessed with her new psychology theory - the three levels of why. Armed with one of her mother's old psychology textbooks she figures if she can real reason for people's actions, then everything will be sorted. But all the psychology in the world can't explain why Alex isn't as romantic as she would like him to be, why Becky and Jodi are at each other's throats, or why Loverboy - the bull Claire sells to Nick - keeps breaking out of Nick's yards and returning to Drovers Run.

Incapacitated by an injured foot, a bored Stevie has become addicted to the two-way radio. What was supposed to be a way of her keeping in touch around the farm has become an opened Pandora's Box. Kate is feeling lonely and overworked at Drovers when a fence job on the Drovers/Killarney border sees her having to work with Sandra. She so impresses Sandra that it leads to a job offer: Come and run Kinsella's for her. It's Kate's dream come true but before she accepts she needs to know if Jodi is planning to return to Drover's. Tayler has a new study-buddy, Wolfgang, that Patrick doesn't approve of, causing Tayler to be angry with Patrick for not trusting her. Meanwhile, Moira tries to tell Phil that she is pregnant, but is afraid to disappoint him and ruin their life plans.
Rumours run amok after the ball, as the town believes Steve is dating Marcus. Repurcussions occur when one man, Ted Franklin, causes some problems for Drovers and Tayler takes it upon herself to dig up gossip on him to bargain with.
Jaz tries to train her horse Annie to become a working horse, but Annie is afraid of something and causes problems on the farm. With help from Ben, Jaz tries to figure out if Annie can stay at Drovers or whether she should show jump again.
Ingrid's husband Paul is still investigating cattle theft in the area and this makes Ingrid very unconfortable. Meanwhile, Phil is trying to make Moira feel better and has a special evening planned for them. Tayler gets an F on an essay, while Patrick got an A+, she doesn't tell him and she doesn't know how to make the next essay better.
Ingrid is becoming more and more anxious about Paul's presence and it's affecting her work. Meanwhile, Marcus, Ben and the girls realize Paul's true side so they start making a plan to get rid of him for good.
Moira is preparing to play the leading girl in Phil's musical. During the rehearsals she finds out that Phil's son is getting married, but Phil isn't planning to attend the wedding, and she decides to interfere. Meanwhile, a new vet arrives in town and Stevie feels guilty for finding him attractive. Grace feels bad about what she said to Ingrid before she left.
Drovers has a lot of debt and they need to shear all their sheep in one day to get them to the sale in time. Grace and Marcus go to Fisher to pick up some shearing tools and he has a surprise for her, but Grace sees Ingrid and her guilty conscience comes back. Meanwhile, a fire at Drovers causes even bigger issues for the future.
Grace finally finds someone willing to carry their cattle, but this involves a two day journey for the girls. Meanwhile, Stevie worries that she can't handle the farm without Alex. A love triangle blooms between Jaz, Ben and Ben's ex, Monique. Meanwhile, Grace decides to tell Marcus the truth about Ingrid.
