What did the French Emperor mean to the Germans? He covers Europe with bloody wars, but his troops also bring the ideas of the revolution with them. The "Napoléon Code", the first civil code, stipulates the equality of all before the law and makes constitutional history. The Confederation of the Rhine is formed under pressure from France. Napoleon raises Saxony, Bavaria and Württemberg to kingdoms - important steps on the way to a German national consciousness. However, the freedom movement initiated by Napoleon also developed into a powerful anti-Napoleonic liberation movement. Because for many Germans, Napoleon is not a shining light, but – as some historians still see him today – “one of the great mass murderers of modern history.” The four-part documentary series “Napoleon and the Germans” embarks on an opulently designed journey through time. She takes a look at everyday life in Germany 200 years ago and looks for traces and relics of the Napoleonic era in Germany.
