From what little I've watched of it, I don't have a lot of nice things to say about 2 Broke Girls, but judging by how painlessly Ed Quinn was able to slot into One Day at a Time, I guess 2BG was a swell place for him to earn his multi-cam chops, at the very least. Knowing how to play as contained and small as he does here, without coming across as off-key in comparison to some of the more expressive performers in the main cast, is a considerable feat. But the tonal variance has been and is one of this show's main strengths; the scene between Rita Moreno and Stephen Tobolowsky towards the end of this episode is a masterclass in that regard. There's no sense of gear-shifting from "big and funny" to "serious drama" and back again; the scene is allowed simply to ebb and flow where it needs to go, the two veterans nimbly playing off each other. That's why multi-cam is such a treasure if you love acting. In most single-cam comedies (and dramas), the interplay between actors is, if not always hidden, than at least muted by the editing (shot/reverse shot is a hecking scourge, I tell you). I'm not going to pretend there aren't edits in multi-cam, but even so, we still get to see actors playing together to a much larger degree, because they're there, on stage with each other, on, and not off-camera somewhere reciting their lines while the camera's on their scene partner.
Nice, unexpected Twist at the End.
