A goat and a wolf take shelter in a hut on the night of a storm. They can't see each other in the darkness, and while talking, they find they have a lot in common and form a friendship. They make a promise to meet the next day in front of the hut for lunch, they will recognize each other with the phrase "One storm night". When they return the next day they are both surprised that they are a goat and wolf.
After Gabu and Mei meet secretly, Mei returns to the herd to discover that her little sister, Mii is running a high fever. But the herbal remedy to lower fever only grows up on a high rock near the wolves' territory. When Mei meets with Gabu to tell him about it, He tells her that it is too dangerous for her to go there. Gabu then lies to Mei, telling her that he has climbed that rock many times and can retrieve the plant with no problem.
Gabu is scolded by his boss, Giro for messing up during a hunt. When Gabu meets up with Mei, She asks him why he looks so worried, when Gabu explains the situation, Mei misunderstands and thinks that Gabu is the boss of the wolves.
Mei picked some berries for Gabu and her to eat together when they meet. When Gabu gives Mei his share of the berries, she realizes that he only likes meat, and jokingly accuses Gabu of meeting with her to eat her. Although goat meat is his favorite, he tries to convince Mei that he doesn't even like goat meat. Mei decides to reverse roles where she plays "Mei the Wolf" that stalks and attacks "Gabu the Goat".
Some swallows come flying by to sing about things they saw and heard. When a pair of the swallows see Mei and Gabu together, they start singing a song about a goat named Mei and a wolf named Gabu that are "secret friends". Worried that they might sing the song to the wolf pack or goat herd, thus exposing their secret, Mei and Gabu chase the birds all around trying to convince them not to sing that song.
Upon retuning from their meeting at Taka Taka Plateau, Gabu is confronted by some of the wolves from his pack about smelling a goat near there, and Mei is likewise confronted by some goats saying they smelled a wolf near there. Realizing that it is no longer a good place to meet, Gabu and Mei each set off to find the perfect place where they can meet without being discovered.
A goat named Kuro, who is the grandson of the black goat High Elder comes to visit the white goat herd one day. When Mei goes off to look for a four-leaf clover to give to Gabu, Kuro comes by to help her find one. Gabu happens to pass by and sees Mei with Kuro. Later when they meet, Mei sees Kuro on his way back home, and she runs over to say goodbye, Gabu Thinks that Mei would rather be with Kuro and tells her that they shouldn't see each other anymore because she would be happier with her own kind.
Gabu goes to the meeting place to wait for Mei, he is extremely hungry and tired because he has a toothache which has made it difficult to eat or sleep for the last several days. He goes into a bush to take a quick nap while waiting. The bush happens to be in the middle of the spot where the goat kids from three herds come for their annual field trip. Although he made a vow to Mei to never eat another goat again, all those tasty little goats running around may be too much for Gabu to handle.
Lolo, Giro's sister gave birth to baby wolves. The pack decides to throw a party near a field where Gabu told Mei to meet him so he could show her something spectacular that she might like. If mei goes back home, she will miss out on the surprise he wanted to show her so he has to keep her entertained just outside of the area until the party is over. So Gabu has to do a lot of running back and forth between the party and Mei.
One day, while sneaking off to see Mei, Gabu is spotted by a female wolf named Lala. Lala asks where He is going and tells him she wants to go with him. He tells her only guys can go where he is going, so Lala asks him to bring her back a present. Lala and two friends decide to secretly follow Gabu. When they catch up to Gabu, they see him chasing Mei and think that he is hunting a goat for Lala as a present.
A rumor about a wolf and a goat being friends is spreading among the goats. But when they find out the rumor was spread by Usaru, a lying monkey that only tells the truth once in a hundred times, can anyone really believe such a ridiculous story?
Mei, Mii, Tap and Moro want to go to Para Para Field to see a newborn baby black goat. However, they have to pass through dangerous Maga Maga Forest to get there. Tap acts as a guide, but they get lost along the way. Gabu and two other wolves happen to be hunting nearby. Gabu helps show the right way to go through Mei while keeping the other two wolves away.
After having a fun day with Gabu, Mei returns home. Tap and Moro tell Mei that Mii followed her earlier that day when she snuck off. Mei wants to go look for her little sister, but the adult goats tell her that it is too dangerous to go out because it will get dark soon. Half asleep, Mii clings onto Gabu's tail, thinking it is Mei. Now it is up to Gabu to return Mii home safely.
Grandma takes Mei to Mount Meso Meso to pick some clover. Grandma then tells Mei that they will be staying in a cave for the night and go deliver the clover to the black goats in the morning, but Mei promised to meet with Gabu. Will Mei get back in time to see Gabu?
When the adult wolves are told to team up with a pup to be a role model for the day, Gabu is partnered with Boro. When Boro spots a deer, he asks Gabu if they can hunt it, but Gabu refuses. Later that evening, Gabu overhears the pups talking about the animals they caught that day. When Boro says he spotted some deer, but didn't hunt it, the other pups start saying that Gabu is a coward and he can't hunt. Will Gabu ever be able to regain the respect of Boro and the other pups?
One day Mei and Gabu get together but are unable to play because it's raining, so they yell to the sky: "rain, rain go away!". Since then there has been a drought for several days and all the grass in the nearby fields has withered. The goats decide to go to a distant prairie where there is still lots of grass, but while they are there, the wolves attack.
Gabu takes Mei to a spot where he found some interesting rocks, when suddenly they fall into a hole. They need to find a way out, or they could be stuck in there forever.
Grandma takes all the young goats to see a rainbow at the same place that Gabu promised to meet with Mei. Will Gabu's presence ruin all the goats' fun?
Mei finds a lost fawn and she decides she will help the baby deer find her herd. Earlier Gabu messed up a hunt and Giru told him that a wolf that can't hunt isn't a wolf. Mei goes to ask Gabu to help her, but He tells her he can't. Gabu thinks back about what Giru said to him and he has to make a decision. If he hunts the fawn it will prove to Giru that he is a competent hunter, but it will also upset Mei and possibly destroy his relationship with her. What's a wolf to do?
A prank by Mei and the other kids has caused the High Elder's back pain to worsen. Mei learns that the only way for the elder's back to recover is for him to soak in the hot springs in Yuge Yuge Valley. It is to far for the Elder to travel back and forth, so the goats decide to move there. Mei feels responsible to take care of the Elder, but everything she and the other kids try only make his back pain worse. If the goats move, Mei may never be able to see Gabu again...
Gabu protects Mei from being attacked by an unfamiliar wolf that has wounds on his body. The wolf sees that Gabu has protected Mei just before passing out. Later, Gabu learns that the wolf's name is Jess and has fled his territory after attacking his boss. Will Gabu be able to convince Jess not to tell anyone about his relationship with Mei?
Mei had a dream that the goats and wolves were friends. Mei tells Gabu about her dream and thought about how wonderful it would be if the goats and wolves could live happily toghether. Mei comes up with a plan to make her dream a reality. Will Mei's plan work? Can the wolves and goats really become friends?
