Peacemaker is unlike anything either Marvel or DC have ever put out in this new era of content, and that's a great thing. James Gunn returns to write this series, and proves once again he's a master, combining good characters, great dialogue, fun and a hell of a soundtrack. Only James Gunn could set a fight scene to slow romantic tunes of The Quireboys. John Cena has great comedic sensibilities, and this role is perfect for him.

There's a lot here to like, and a lot of potential. I'm hoping we can get this Peacemaker in DC Comics (the actual comics) in his own series, moving forward.

I was on the fence about this show, but this was a strong debut (even beyond the delightful opening credits). As the supporting cast rounds out you can see a worthwhile and oddly moving story start to form.

A PROMISING START WITH JAMES GUNN TRADEMARKS AND AN EXCITING PREMISE

:white_check_mark: Things that pass: Characters, Look, Music, Memorability, Expectations, Replay Value

Mature and twisted comedy á la James Gunn; an exciting title sequence; John Cena fully embracing the role of the awkward anti-hero; the killer soundtrack, filled with rock´n roll goodies; a plot that deals with the fallout from The Suicide Squad (2021) and fleshes out Peacmaker as a character, particualrly regarding his human relations; the Hanoi Rocks nod; Cena dancing to The Quireboys in his undies; an amazing final fight scene.

:part_alternation_mark: Things that fall in between: Story, Emotions, Pacing, Novelty

Swearing, sex and maturity just for the sake of it rather than as a natural part of the story; loads of initial puzzle pieces and introduced plot threads, but no clear direction for the series; a slower second half.

I'm not a big fan of James Gunn's juvenile humor. But I think Cena is an underrated comedic actor. Way funnier than the Rock. He makes the show worth watching than whatever the plot is.

I think this proves that James Gunn is the best comic book director

Peacemaker was the most annoying person in the entire film and I really wanted him to die. Honestly.
So when they made this show I thought, they’d have to make it REALLY good for me to watch it. Then everyone and their mom said it it actually was.

I guess his sad sad backstory wants to justify him being an asshole.
But I like that his team keeps ridiculing him and making his life appropriately “difficult”. Great lines to call someone out on their bull shit.

But “when men were real men because they weren’t afraid to be women” sounds about the opposite of sexist. And Eagly is great. True love, man. Maybe there’s hope yet to re-educate that douche.

What the hell did I just watch?
Haha, was fun though

Eagly is the absolute best! <3

I love where this is going.

Honestly impressed!!

I wasn't sure about the idea of this show and having Peachmaker as a main character but this was very very enjoyable and promising

John over the years became a great actor and I don't think people give him enough credit

really excited for the next episode

Brief thoughts on the first 3 episodes.

So far, very entertaining. The humor isn't as great as the stuff I'd see in other James Gunn stuff like say Super. Still, the ensemble here is crazy good and John Cena really owns the role. This is definitely a great contrast to the Marvel Disney+ shows. It'll be fun to watch for the next couple of weeks while I wait for bigger stuff like House of the Dragon and Better Call Saul.

What the actual F. John Cena has great Comedic timing. This was made for him. Can’t wait to watch the other episode.

Eagly is the best!:two_hearts:

What a surprisingly wonderful premiere. I'm excited to continue!

Was this supposed to funny or just a load of WOKE crap!
I've decided it was just CRAP!! stupid story-line, very bad acting, loads of foul language thrown in..!!
Yes definitely CRAP!

Fun ride. Definitely embracing the wacky side of DC and Cena is brilliant in the role.

Love the opening; wasn't expecting that.

This is a very well-crafted show with good casting and directing. Looking forward to watching more of it.

He got stabbed a heck of a lot though, plus jumped from several floors up onto a hard pavement with only a flimsy awning in between. Pretty hard to imagine him being able to walk after that, let alone to be alive at all.

I thought it was rubbish until the last few minutes. If I don't like episode 2 will turn off.

Notes

  • The mop visual callback—wow

Peacemaker: "If somebody's committing a crime...
Jamil: "Yes?"
Peacemaker: "...am I supposed to control what their ethnicity is?"

  • Watching a "superhero" walk out of a hospital is hilarious to me. IDK why
  • What an intro—wow

Peacemaker: "Yeah? Who's Daddy's boy?"

  • Omg, John Cena's face

August Smith: "This one has full-body force field."

  • Now I see why his dad treats him like trash. What a room!

Waitress: "Zoodles. Good choice."
Peacemaker: "Thank you."
[Breathes in.]
Peacemaker: "'Good choice'."

Harcourt: "Any of the rest of you wanna finish it for him?"

  • RIP that guy
  • Welp, she's definitely ain't human

Peacemaker: "Activate sonic boom!"

  • And she just died

Review
It's very different from what I expected but also exactly what I expected too. There are hints of potential plot and character stuff here, but we'll see where it goes. Overall, a pretty solid pilot but not one that has me begging for Episode 2.

Love the opening credits, love John Cena in this, love Eagly, love the soundtrack! This was the most fun I had with a season premiere in quite some time.

loading replies

It's different, to say the least. Kinda nice to actually have an anti-hero in a world laden with superhero stuff, and the awkward, crass one at that. Considering Peacemaker's racist background, looking forward how to the show will handle that aspect without resorting to typical MCU style "kumbaya" take.

loading replies

Seriously?? Gonna make jokes about abortion now?
That's real low point.

loading replies

It's whatever Gunn's want it to be it seems, with its good and bad.

loading replies

This show is what you get when you cross the Marvel soy aesthetic with the oeuvre of Danny McBride. I... quite like it.

loading replies

That first minute interaction with the janitor was funny as hell.

loading replies

anyone else concerned about that longass squiggly vein that goes from John Cena's right bicep to his chest?

loading replies

It's impossible to skip the opening, its weird but funny as hell.

loading replies

Honestly thought it was going to suck big time, but Cena is great as always, and the story looks like it could be entertaining if they keep the humor up.

I'm actually excited to watch the rest now.

A breath of fresh air. Cannot wait to see where this goes!

Off to an interesting start! The writing and the humor are quite solid, on the juvenile side but it also makes sense because of Peacemaker as a character. I think so far all the characters seem to have something interesting to offer so we’ll see how it goes. We also get a better picture of Peacemaker now, which means, how big of an asshole he is. I liked however that there is nonetheless nuance about it, like his relationship with his father.
