The lives of women behind bars in a female prison.
Lizzie collapses in the garden; Meg finds her and calls for help. Meanwhile, David traps Cass in the shed and attacks her with a knife. Terrified, she beheads him with a spade. With the facts unclear, a near catatonic Cass falls under suspicion of murder. Lizzie is taken to hospital. Ann has to break the string of grisly news to the inmates and tells Minnie that the Department has granted several of the reforms, including work release. Judy, Minnie and Pixie are given permission to visit Lizzie in hospital. Before they leave, Min bumps into Joan and pinches her keys, in a bid to show her up. As they leave for the hospital, Sonia tells Joan who stole them; soon after, Meg finds Joan tied up and gagged under a shower - she accuses Minnie of attacking her. After Paul tells Wally about Ann's illness, he tries to offer support, but she brushes him aside as she goes into hospital. Someone is out to get Sonia, and puts ground glass in her hand cream.
Judy, Pixie and Minnie visit Lizzie in hospital and say a tearful final goodbye to their friend as she prepares for her new life with her family. Back at the prison, Joan demands action from Colleen after the supposed attack by Minnie. A cell search turns up the keys in her cell; when she returns from visiting Lizzie, she is sent to Solitary, but denies the attack. Colleen and Meg don't believe Minnie did it either. Cass is allowed to take Minnie's meal to her in the pound, but Joan has poisoned it, and Minnie is violently ill during the night. Meg accidentally tells the reporters that Cass killed Bridges in self defence. When Colleen goes to visit Ann, the Minister visits the prison, and Joan makes sure he knows what has been going on. Meg gets the blame for talking to the press, and is replaced as Acting Deputy Governor by Joan. As the Minister is shown round the jail, a near-riot erupts in the Rec Room. She asks him to come back later, and has two armed goons waiting for him. He gets away, so the men shoot Meryl instead. Sonia grows paranoid and jittery after her sheets are slashed, and a dummy is hanged in her cell. Cass unwittingly brings a snake into the prison from the garden, and it conceals itself in the cell block. Camilla and Mo are released.
As the snake slithers around the prison, Sonia insists she heard something in her cell in the night. Later, both Helen and Meg are bitten by the snake; Helen has to be rushed to hospital. Bobbie retrieves the snake's body, and Sonia loses the plot after being locked in her cell with it over night. The women bid an emotional farewell to Stan as he retires. Myra gives herself up. Wally visits Ann and she tells him they are finished. Judy warns Ann the recent troubles are aimed at her. Reb doesn't want to be involved in the riot but Marie gives her no choice. Leigh exposes the minister to the press, thwarting Roland's blackmail attempts. Joan pays Shane's father to let her keep him. Edna gives Marlene a bottle of barley water laced with rat poison. Joan drugs the officers' tea urn. The riot explodes in the rec room and Joan is taken hostage. Marie smacks Leigh in the face. Ann and all the officers except Heather are knocked out by the drugged tea. Marie has Joan beaten up. She goes after Heather when she realises she is still awake but Heather evades her. The rioting women trash and set fire to the cells. Dot refuses to let them into her cell. Ann comes to and sets out to help the inmates, rescuing Leigh from her blazing cell. Judy stops Marie escaping through the kitchen as the riot comes to an end. Joan wants to adopt Shane. The police try to get a semi-conscious Reb to blame Bobbie for her attack. Alice and Frances are violently ill after drinking Marlene's barley water. Leigh learns the minister has resigned following her accusations. Myra returns to H Block but Judy gives her the cold shoulder. Marlene tries to convince Judy that Edna poisoned the barley water but accidentally smashes the bottle, destroying the evidence. Ann tells Meg she has been fired.
Joan is appointed Ann's replacement, to everyone's dismay. Judy lets Myra know her feelings about the thankless task of looking after things while she was away. Bobbie stabs Dennis in the arm with a pair of scissors. Reb arrives back and tells Ann that Bobbie didn't attack her, but won't say who did. Ann allows the prisoners to have a barbecue in the garden and Edna doctors Marlene's steak. Reb finally meets with her dying father. Edna is released after her appeal is upheld. Marlene collapses with stomach pains.
Bobbie is suspected of poisoning Marlene, as she cooked her steak, but the women realise Edna did it. Rachel and Judy go to see Ann, but she wants proof of their allegations. Rachel phones Edna's husband to warn him about her. Marlene worries about Bobbie after finding a suicide note on her bed. Dennis rescues a man from a crashed car just before it catches fire. Marie threatens to expose Joan, demanding she help her escape. Dot accidentally scalds Mrs O'Reagan and herself with hot fat. Bobbie tells Marlene she was going to kill herself, but stole the wrong pills from the infirmary. Joan is informed that Ann has been reinstated.
Ann has been reinstated due to Leigh putting pressure on the right people and thanks her for it. Joan is furious. Reb learns her father has died. Rachel takes charge in the kitchen following Mrs O'Reagan's accident but the women cause a ruckus when she messes things up and the food runs out. Leigh goes to trial and is released on a two year bond. Joyce is elected the officer's new union rep. Joan agrees to arrange Marie's escape when Marie makes threats against Shane. Shane and Nicky get stuck in a storm drain, with the water levels rising. Judy gets a letter from Lori saying her little grandson will be deaf for life. Reb tells Meg she wants to tell the Governor who pushed her down the stairs after Marie taunts her into punching her. Joan arrives at the storm drain and begs the rescue squad not to let Shane die.
Marie denies attacking Reb, but is sent to solitary anyway. Shane and Nicky are rescued from the storm drain, but the police diver drowns in the rescue attempt. Judy and Myra realise Joan set Dot up to make it look like she poisoned the staff room tea urn. A new camp cook, Ray Procter, arrives. Marlene mocks him and starts pinching things from the kitchen. Rachel berates her but it turns out anything she hasn't stolen, Ray has! At the VJ hearing, Joan gives evidence against Marie and extra time gets added to Myra, Bobbie, Dot, Reb and Marie's sentences. Heather tells Dennis she thinks Joan doped the urn. Joan takes Reb to the shower block and keeps watch while Marie bashes her. When Heather finds her badly injured, Reb claims Joan did it. Marie scales the fence during exercise period and makes a spectacular escape from Wentworth aboard a waiting helicopter.
Reb's accusations against Joan are being taken very seriously as she is taken to hospital. New prisoner Bev Baker turns out to be a psycho who is in Wentworth for murdering and dismembering several people. Myra stops Bobbie escaping in the garbage truck. Joan visits Shane in the hospital and clashes with his father. Marlene has the idea of raising money to buy a reading machine for deaf children by trying to break a world record. Bev admits she killed several more people than the one she was charged for. Rachel goes to trial: she gets five years, and is transferred to the prison farm. Marlene is terrified of Bev. The police arrive to see Joan: she thinks they want to question her about Reb but instead they arrest her for abducting Shane.
Joan learns that Shane has been bashed by his father into backing up his claims against her. With Marie and Reb out of the way, Lou sounds Bev out about being the brains behind the rackets but she isn't interested in the money. Shane runs away from his father but Joan tells him he must go back to his father until she can get custody. Bev burns her hand in the press to see what it feels like. The women decide on a waltz marathon as their record breaker for charity. Munroe wants money from Joan in return for giving up Shane: she says she'll see him in court. Myra tells Ann they are all terrified of Bev. Bev deliberately traps Dot in the cold room in the kitchen. Bev slashes Lou's arm to illustrate the sort of payoff she wants to become involved in the rackets. Bobbie escapes from the kitchen using a copy of Ray's key and the escape alarm goes off while she is half way over the fence.

Joan learns she won't get custody of Shane without a job. Everyone else is overjoyed Joan has been sacked until Joyce tells the officers the union has ordered they strike in support of her.
The officers go on strike, though nobody really wants to. The Major comes to visit Joan. The women are terrified at being locked up with Bev on the loose and no screws. The officers' replacements turn out to be social workers. Bev threatens to kill the next person to walk into the laundry, which turns out to be one of the social workers, but the women thwart her attempt. Dennis is so opposed to the strike he crosses the picket line and goes into work. Bev announces a raffle with a $5 prize. Marlene wins the first draw: Bobbie gets the ""consolation prize."" Phil Cleary, one of the social workers, tells Meg he knew Bobbie on the outside and her mother is dead. Bobbie gets her ""prize"" from Bev - she takes the bandages off her hands and repoens her cuts with a razor blade.
Myra hits Bev in retaliation for what happened to Bobbie. Terror among the inmates continues to grow. Heather tries to follow Dennis' example and go into work, but is beaten back by the angry picketing mob. Bev starts her raffle again. Reb accidentally admits to a reporter that Joan did not beat her up. Dot goes to Wentworth General for tests and when the social worker accompanying her leaves her alone, she heads back to Wentworth in a taxi. Joan, Shane and the Major go fishing. Myra and Ray squabble with one of the social workers and tip salad dressing down her. Bev attacks Judy with a soldering iron, but Judy passes out. Reb offers to give her mother some of her inheritance if she helps her escape. The women try to drug Bev, but she outsmarts them and Marlene drinks the drugged tea instead. Bev stabs a male social worker with one of Dot's knitting needles.
Judy, Dot and one of the social workers find the body under Dot's bed. The hunt is on for Bev, but when she is caught she injects herself with an empty hypodermic and dies in Dennis' arms. Joyce resigns as union rep. Phil tries to ask Meg out. The union agrees to the officers returning to work. The seemingly naive Angela Adams arrives on a six week sentence on forgery charges, claiming to have been set up by her boyfriend. Diedre knocks out the policewoman on duty at the hospital and whisks Reb out in a wheelchair. The dance practice is interrupted by Joan's unexpected return to work.
Myra tells Joan she won't find it as easy to get her own way now, as they are all united against her. Diedre hides Reb at the family's holiday home. The waltz team is chosen: Myra, Judy, Bobbie, Marlene, Angel and Alice, with Dot as coach. Reb tells Diedre she won't be getting any of her money after all. Heather and Dennis spend the night together. Angel stirs it between Myra and Judy by telling Judy that Myra warned her to be careful she doesn't seduce her. The Major suggests Joan give up her job and come to live with him. An anonymous death threat arrives at Wentworth addressed to ""the person in charge."" Dennis's wife Doris turns up unexpectedly. Diedre is worried that Reb is so ill and calls the police, who recapture her. Reb vows to kill her mother.
Doris Cruickshank wants Dennis back. Marie is recaptured but sent straight to Blackmoor. Angel causes more trouble between Myra and Judy. Joan plans to move away with her father. Reb and Diedre are brought to Wentworth - Reb refuses to see her mother. Ann gets another threatening letter and calls in the police. Angel sets off the fire alarm and drives a wedge between Marlene and Dot. She also tells Joan that if she comes near her again she'll say she tried to molest her. A mad PR woman, Barbara Krantz, arrives to handle the dance marathon. Ann gets a round-the-clock guard. Phil tells Bobbie she has a little sister and her father wants to see her. Special guest athlete Cliff Young arrives to support the marathon attempt. Dennis is suspended for breaking the strike. Joan threatens Reb again. Ann finds another threatening letter on her mantelpiece despite the police guard on her flat.
Diedre tells Judy it was Marie who really bashed Reb. Angel finds a magnet in a drawer and uses it to play havoc with Judy's pacemaker. Ann gets another threating phone call at work. Lou and Alice bully Diedre. The dance marathon begins and the women are dead on their feet after only the first night. At Shane's custody hearing, he says he would rather live with ""Auntie Joan"" than his father. Ann tells Heather that Marie has made a statement implicating her in drug smuggling and aiding her escape. Shane is taken away from his father, but is made a ward of the state rather than being given into Joan's custody.
Heather admits the truth of the drugs allegations, but denies helping Marie escape. Joan says goodbye to Shane and decides to stay at Wentworth. Alice sprains her ankle, and Dot takes her place on the dance team. Heather accuses Joan of setting her up. The brake line on Ann's car is cut. Reb turns a blind eye to Lou and Frances bullying Diedre, and even joins in. Dennis tells Heather he is going back to England. Dot collapses with only ninety minutes to go. Angel overhears Phil and Meg discussing a date and calls in an acquaintance to rape Meg. The women break the record and have a half hour to go to win the sponsor's money. An anonymous caller phones the prison and tells Ann he has planted a bomb.
Wentworth is evacuated, but the dance team refuse to leave until they have completed the marathon. One of the deaf children goes missing in the confusion, so Judy goes to try and find her and collapses with exhaustion. The women complete the marathon and join the evacuation. The bomb threat turns out to be a hoax. Angel slashes Marlene's teddy bear with a pair of scissors and sets Bobbie up for it. Heather asks Myra to help get rid of Joan. She and the women co-operate to set Joan up for everything from bashings to drugs inside the jail. Ann orders Meg to take statements from all the women with regards to Joan's brutality. Bobbie bashes Angel in the shower block. Meg is surprised at home by a masked intruder and opens her front door to escape, only to let in Peter Wright, the man Angel hired to rape her.
Peter Wright and his accomplice tie Meg to her bed, gag her and rape her. The women shun Bobbie following her attack on Angel. Meg tries to cope with her ordeal but won't listen to Ann's urging her to call the police. Joan lets the women know Angel lagged on Bobbie and they all realise what Angel is really like. Her grandmother visits the prison and tells Ann she is evil. One of the candidates for the vacant handyman's job turns out to be Stan. The other candidate, Neville Sloan, tries to heavy Stan to get him to drop out. Angel is sent to coventry by the inmates. Joan gets Lou and her heavies to beat Diedre up in the laundry. When Reb won't do anything to help her, Myra and Judy rush to her aid.
Myra and Judy save Diedre from Lou and Alice's beating but she gets knocked out in the struggle. Reb finally comes to her senses and they make up. Meg reports her rape to the police. Diedre is released after the happy reunion with Reb. Stan tells his wife Edie he has a job at Wentworth and she assumes he means as an officer. Pixie is brought back in for shoplifting. Meg tells Phil she was raped. Myra and Heather mastermind a plot to set up Joan to make it look like she molested one of the women - Pixie agrees to be the ""victim"". Lou plots to get rid of Stan and replace him with Neville, her boyfriend. Reb distracts Lou from ruining the women's frame-up of Joan but it all goes pear-shaped anyway. Heather realises it won't work and takes the blame. Ann is furious and sacks her on the spot.
Joan gloats following Heather's sacking. Meg identifies Peter Wright in a police line-up. She realises Angel knows something about the rape. Reb gets a friend to smuggle some dope plants in. Bobbie fights with her father when he comes to visit. Joan warns Lou to leave Stan alone, but she wants Joan to help get rid of him. Kerryn Davies arrives on a two year sentence for fraud. Joan won't let her phone her husband. Angel tells the women about Meg's rape. Myra makes her confess she arranged it. Stan pulls up Reb's dope plants as weeds, but Bobbie recovers some. Angel wrecks Dot's cell and ruins her crochet. Ann gets another threatening letter. Joan tries to push Reb off the solitary stairwell again but she fights back. She knocks Joan off the catwalk and runs off, leaving her dangling from the bannisters.
Joyce and Judy rescue Joan, after Reb raises the alarm. Myra and Pixie try to get Kerryn to settle in. Stan asks Edie if she'd be happy for Bobbie to come and visit their home. Myra tells Meg one of the prisoners knows about the rape. Angel steals everyone's clothes so they go to breakfast in their pyjamas. Kerryn finds the separation from her husband difficult to bear. Neville tells Stan he wants his job or he'll tell Edie he's not really back as an officer. Angel sets fire to Marlene's mattress. Phil starts typing classes for the women. Dot collapses after Angel poisons her ulcer medicine. Myra gets information about the rape from Angel and gives it to Meg. The inmates attack Angel and take her to the shower block, where they cut off all her hair. Meg sees it and turns a blind eye. An intruder tries to break into Ann's flat.
The police guard on Ann's flat has been horribly murdered in the break-in attempt. Lou and Reb plot to steal Marlene's money she makes from the book she is running. Angel vows revenge on the women for shaving her head. Reb begins to try and con everyone into thinking she's a reformed character. Neville starts work as Stan's assistant. Kerryn gets to see her husband, Lyle, but won't tell him why she stole the money. The police question the women about the hate campaign against Ann. Lou overhears Ann and Meg discussing the death threats and tells Reb. Neville blackmails Bobbie into having sex with him or he will tell Ann about her dope plants. Reb makes a ransom note demanding $50,000 or Ann will be killed.
Angel stabs Joan with a pair of scissors. Marlene gets her money back from Lou. Angel fills the women's shampoo bottles with caustic soda. She then punches Meg, cracks up and is packed off to an asylum. Kerryn goes on hunger strike until the authorities let her see Lyle in a private visit. VJ Higgins agrees to be lenient with Bobbie as ""a favour"" for Ann. Ann finds the note Reb wrote. Bobbie is forced to have sex with Neville again and Stan catches them afterwards. Ann and the officers realise the note came from inside the prison. Bobbie tries to run Neville down with the tractor but ends up demolishing the shed instead - with Stan still inside.
Both Stan and Neville share the blame for the tractor accident. The threatening letter sent to Ann may contain fingerprints to help catch who is sending them to her. Stan considers taking in Bobbie of he can get her paroled, but Edie thinks he's doing it for another reason. Ann is told to deliver money for ranson and is sent on a mission to do it. Marlene gets a new idea for a scam when she discovers Pixie knows the Bible verse for verse. The women embarrass Kerryn after she tries to make love to her husband in the conjugual right suite. Lou finds out she will be charged as an accomplice to murder
Kerryn remains slient on why she stole the money, and it seems it may be enough for her husband, who gives Meg a note to tell her he's going away. Bobbie gets out for a day to visit her sister after visiting Stan and Edie, but after an accident in the house, Bobbie is accused of attempted burglary. Lou cleverly plans her escape, trying to lure Fran into helping her but getting no response but instead tries her escape during a game of softball, knocking out Phil, Meg and a guard.
Marlene bravely stops Lou in her attempt to break out, leaving her worried with ""i'll skin the rabbit alive"" threats by Kelly. Stan admits to Edie he really is a maintanance worker at Wentworth, not a guard and more than that, he has to lie for Bobbie when she is brought to the police station. Lou reveals a weapon she has stashed and pulls it on Joyce when she thinks Lou is unconscious in solitary, taking her hostage. Lou then shows up at Deidre's house...to take her for all she has.
